hand painted signage: oxenbury & sons
Hi!
Just finished doing these doors in Bridport. They were pretty fiddly to do! I had a load of people asking for business cards when I was writing them so hopefully I’ll get a lot of work through them!!! 😎

Great work aj, not enough traditional stuff on here. I’m currently working on shopfronts at a World Heritage town, bit cold this time of year tho!

Hopefully some people will get back to me! one guy was impressed with my work and he wants me to have a look at doing his canalboat. That would be brilliant because some of the work on the boats is amazing and I would love to give it a go!
Im definately getting through to people that traditional signs are cool! I know not everyone wants handlettered but im determined to keep it going around here if I can! Its getting your foot in the door that I find takes a bit of time but once enough people know what you do then word will spread!……….

I hate writing in the cold! I wrote a board in the snow once on a hoarding around a new development. I was nearly biting my fingers off when I was defrosting in the car! 😉

Thanks! I think lots of people around here assume that traditional is more costly than vinyl, therefore they are afraid to ask for it.
But I find that if I put myself out in public, painting something, more folks are inclined to come up and ask me about it than if I was doing the same job in vinyl.
Of course you get those "I can’t draw a straight line" type comments and such, but some folks are sincerely interested in a traditional job.
Oftentimes I find myself giving someone a better price if they get a painted sign. Heck, it costs ME far less to paint something!
But that’s the catch-22…not just anyone CAN paint, so try not to sell yourself short.
These days, many people’s eyes have been trained to see "computer perfect", even if that sometimes means "computer ugly" signs.
This year I had a great deal of painted signs, still more vinyl than painted tho.
And far more work than last year!
Good luck…I would love to see what you could do to a canal boat.

I hope I do get to do the canalboat cos that would be fantastic! Ive also just started painting rocking horses for someone that makes them. Ive been trying to track down completely child friendly paints to use. I painted a base coat on the horse and it doesnt cover very well. Its a pity I cant use one shot for it!

I did a canal boat in vinyl last year. The owner really wanted it hand painted but couldn’t find anyone to do it so I ended up getting the job. I did my best to give it that hand painted look but obviously you can’t beat the real thing.

Narrowboat work is hard to get into, Have you any boatyards nearby?
The reason I ask is we had a share in a narrowboat, but the brush people that do the work quite often live on a narrowboat themselves, and so are always cheaper than land based painters, and are on the cut already, the better ones are often booked up for quite a few months in advance. From my experience, most charge by the letter, for names, and like jill says its not as expensive as some percieve,Good luck, in keeping traditional going. It will never die as long as people like you and Jill are pasionate.

I was willing to work on regardless, but the ‘one shot’ refused… it went all funny even with special additivesAbout safe paints: Handovers used to supply Deka paints the equivalent of one shot but in acrylic form – They may still stock it

I’m a traditional signwriter myself and do mainly narrowboats.
I’m based on the K&A at Bradford on Avon.I do now offer vinyl as well but in really traditional styles.

I’m getting a little bit better at them.
I would have never known they existed without going to Scotland last May and seeing some guys painting them at the meet.

stunning stuff aj …..thanks for posting you just cant beet traditional when its done right . The channels are a pain used to signwrite trucks for coach bulders years ago all the bodys were slatted wood ….a nightmare when you were a bit to generous with the paint as it would creap along 😀 😀

Wow, love the work! Wish I could do hand painted signs! How do I begin? Anyone have any advice lol? I’d not want to do it full time, but It’d be nice for a church notice board in Wales I’ve been asked to do by a friend of my dads! I won’t get paid a lot, but after all it’s a Church, a friend, and I love the village it’s in!
