bit of a ramble im afraid…

have a job lined up for fitting on monday, simple enough, applying dibond fascias to existing wood shop front with stand off acrylic lettering. the wood fascia is built out from wall. customer has now decided today she wants some lighting. at present she has 3 gold/brass spot light things, only been up a year and heavily tarnished. we planned just to remove, fit sign and refit if she wanted. ideally she wants a long trough light, like the signlux. but we have one of these ourselves and with the sign being quite deep, number one it isnt going to light it up like "blackpool illuminations" and number two, this kind of light needs to be bolted direct to the wall doesn’t it, i can’t see how i can fit it to the wooden box that is there at present. tried to push her towardds the bullet style lighting (portland) which are still contemporary and brighter but she’s having none of it.

basically, can anyone offer any advice on what lighting to suggest to her. the trough light needs to be 16ft long, and needs to be attached to the face of the wooden box or from the top of the wood, whilst illuminating the sign which is 1125mm deep. i can’t see any hope here but as usual maybe one of you can point out a solution for me?!

    Kate,

You could try the Highlight system from Insight ( http://www.insightsignsystems.com ). Their troughlight is used to illuminate advertising hoardings as well as fascia signs & is available with a number of different brackets to allow for different backgrounds & depths of sign. If you can’t see exactly what you want on the website give them a call, I’ve always found them easy to talk to and rwady to adapt any of their off the shelf stuff to suit site specific adaptations.

    Good Luck!

SMP – http://www.sign-makers-products.co.uk – also have adjustable brackets for their trough lights that you can extend and also change the angle to get right if necessary.

    Hi Kate

I’m sure Portland can do longer brackets to move the light further out and hence throw more light back at the sign, rather than at a shallow angle. Don’t think they are standard but 100% sure they will make them if asked.

They also do a flat twist bracket that can fix onto the top of things, rather than onto the wall (ie, flush onto the top of a box fascia). Can’t remember the distance between the two pre-drilled holes in the twist bracket so don’t know how deep a box fascia would need to be to use them – you could always drill another hole.

I’ve seen other competitive products very similar to Signlux but that have two rows of tubes to give much more light – sorry can’t recall the manufacturer think they are a French company?

    Cheers

Have you thought about portlands adlux? or using sign lux up and down lighting together if you want bright?

While we’re on the subject……several mentions have been made of Portland lighting products. I’m about to buy some Bullets from them. Any good?

Andy haven’t used the bullets all I can say is everything we have used of theirs has been very well made and equal to the job, prices aren’t too bad either, and also very helpful people.

thanks for all your replys, i’ve been thinking about brackets for most of alst night, and as mentioned above I think the best way to mount on the box would be to use the flat brackets on top of the box. My worry is actually attaching the brackets to the wood. I know when we fitted out signlux we used large hex head screws into wall plugs, as the screw holes were very large.

can anyone recommend what fixings best to use to attach the brackets to the wood?

bloody typical, think you’ve got a job lined up and prepared and then they throw something at you 2 days before! 👿

Just use galvanised coach screws or decking screws (hex head) again from B&Q with a flat washer,

Reminds me of a very old newspaper headline, about a mental patient, who raped the laundry woman and escaped it read: Nut screws washer, and bolts 😉
