    hello there

I did a flood coating of an old sign(on the advice of a uksb regular) for a chap, lettered it and he is so pleased that he wants one for his side wall.

I have some .5 forrex from euro-point and its a brick wall.
the dimensions are 4 metres by 60cm(approx) so It will have to be in two pieces.

This will be the first time I’ve made the whole sign and fitted it.

    How should i fix it?

How will I be able to keep it nice and flat?

and what would be the cheapest way i could put a frame round it? If he is willing to pay for the trim i will do it for him.

    tks for reading

    Jimmy

You need to use sign trim (available from Europoint or equivalent from the likes of Amari etc.) and fit hanging rails to the panels to allow for expansion and contraction. If you try and fit these without signtrim the panels will warp. 🙁

If you phone your suppliers they may be able to give you instruction sheets for making frames

    Phil

thanks for the info. Ive been onto euro point and they gave me a price for the aluminium sing trim.

Are hanging rails different from sign trim by the way?

Is that where the expansion/contraction give comes from?

    James,
a hanging rail or strip is a 10-20mm piece of foamex glued to the panel near or at the top so it "hangs" from the top ali trim. if that dosnt make sense http://www.eye2eye.co.uk/signframe/signframe.htm see this pic

that’s great! another piece falls into place. So simple.

You an phil are helping me sleep better at nights.

    And I’m not joking.

tell me though: would it really cost me 300 quid for 30 feet of this stuff? 😮

    James,
Foamex usually comes in 1220mm x 2440mm (8x4in old money) sheets, other sizes are available, but you should not be paying more than £30 for a sheet for 5mm, will be cheaper with if you have negotiated a rate with your supplier.

Give cherwell a call 01280 840297, they supply trim and panel ready made to fit, at least they will quote a price that is comparable.
They also supply a product (I call them plastic nails) but VK fixings is their term. I have used these many times to fix 5mm foamex direct to brick without it warping. (I would avoid south facing walls though) You just drill a 6mm hole through the foamex knock in the fixing, job done.

Give Kestel a ring 0121 783 0779. I get my frames from them and fit my own panel. Their frames are a 2 part extrusion, very strong and doesn’t fall apart when one end is removed. Panels can be installed from front or side. Maybe not the cheapest but from what I’ve seen and used in the past certainly one of the best.
