its a nice idea, yes… and probably could have allot of possibilities.
however, i think i would like it more if there was simplicity in how it has been made.

so how was it made and what is bi-polarised material?

the light box is made with a plexiglas face. the white part on the lateral of letters is made by 16 mm plexiglas to create a volumetric effect and a halo too. the red face of the letters are covered with this material which is black or transparent in different angles.
the face is illuminated with 2 simple neon.

does the effect only happen when viewed at a particular angle?

probably not, but it looks almost like something is being slid over the letter leaving one area exposed to light.

would you say this was an inexpensive method of creating this effect?

no, the light is filtered and once the letters are black and in other position of the filter is red(the colour of letters).
There are many applications: think at street signs in the night, these can be dynamic, a simple banner with this material(how many dynamic banners did you see?), or even a big mesh, all of this can be dynamic on the part you are applying this material.
I will send you tomorrow 2 other works which will be presented to Inventika 2006 Show in Bucharest, if you give me an email.

is it an expensive product to create?
these days this is a key factor when it comes to lighting these days. simply because of the introduction of led’s and the like.
