  • How would you have done this?

    Hi folks,

I would like to seek the advice and opinions of how you would have done this vinyl on acylic sign.

The sign main board is a approx 8ft x 2ft opaque acylic with black vinyl and full cut out text and graphic.

For us, this is how we have done it,

    1. apply the black vinyl over the acylic board, then trim off the excess from the edges

    2. plotter cut out of the text and graphic using a low-tack vinyl, stick it on in position onto the now black acylic board.

    3. trace the outline of text and graphic manually with sharp penknife, then remove the low-tack vinyl and cut-out black part on the board.

    4. Viola! Completed.

However, i find that this process is really just time consuming and tiring. Is there a better way that you guys would have done it?

By the way, how do I post picture of the sign in this forum?

thanks and have a great day!

Why dont you just cut the black vinyl and remove the letters before applying it? Or am a missing somrthing?

would of said the same to be honest.

Plot it out, weed it, tape it up, then apply to acrylic. 🙄

    Hi Peter,

    Thanks for your reply.

We have tried, cutting out the content in the black, remove it and stick in on. But we do encounter problem in sticking the vinyl as being 8ft long with 80% of "hollow" make it really tacky in aligment.

We have tried sticking application tape over the vinyl to hold the content in place and flood the vinyl over the acylic. But aligment is still a big problem

By the way the graphic look something like a crown stretch on top of the text of "Piano Gallery" .

Not too sure, if that would explain the problem better

thanks and have a great day!

I see your point, yet I would of thought a good quality strong application tape would do the job nicely. Take your time and it should work fine. Did something very similar to this (6ftx2ft perspex panel) and it worked fine using a non-branded Premium app tape.

    Have fun with it!

you could try hinging and applying from the centre but I can’t really understand the problem, unless you are removing the backing paper before securing it in place (!)

p.s. it would be nice to know your name

    Hi Phil,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, for some job, depends on the complexity of text and graphics, we will use the method, but for some job where the graphics is too fine or intrigue, we will still use the "handicraft" method, which is really time consuming.

So i was just wondering if there is any other ways that, would have made the job easier and faster, which we may share with each other.

Thanks and have a great day!

    Hi Lynn,

Thanks for your reply. My name is Jeff.

As the saying goes, a picture says a thousand words. It will be good, if i can post the picture and that can probably give a better idea of what I am saying.

Anyway, the backing paper is remove bit by bit as we apply the vinyl to the acylic..but we would encounter aligment problem as we reach the cut-out part.

Thanks and have a great day!
