Hello.
I just learned how to paint those roses at the Letterheads meet in Scotland last May.
There is a book out that is quite informative about this style of work.
(Paul Priestley here knows the right title)
But I think it’s called Roses and Castles.
I’ve seen some pictures from it and they are breathtaking.
There are still a few painters out there…try to seek one out and see if they will instruct you.

Try W. habberley – meadows for supplies, they used to be in the brownhills/castle vale area somewhere
Oh, and welcome – I used to paint loads of narrow boats in the eighties.

Also – at the price of these brushes I said to my wife I should make a box to keep them in .

I clean my brushes with turpentine and oil them with baby oil.
I have an ultrasonic cleaner too, that uses Rapid Remover to clean them.
Just for fun I googled "Roses and Castles" and quite a few sites came up discussing narrowboat painting.
The guy from Wright’s of Lymm was quite friendly and knowledgeable.
They are making their own paint now too.
I want to paint some roses on my new mailbox.
I’m sure I’ll be the only person around here with something like that!

As I am new to this forum (or is it ‘the boards’ ? ) I take it the hello part I can ask dumb questions !
Is there a FAQ/ Glossary of terms ??
Like – What is pounce ?
From what I have read i would guess its like a stencil ? but thats just a guess ! I am sure there will be other terms I come accross that I can guess what they are, but I might guess wrong !
Do I just keep askin ‘dumb’ questions or is there a beginner page I can read ?

Rich, you are right pouncing is a form of stencil, it used ti be made on paper with a wheel, not unlike a spur on a cowboys boot. the paper was then taped to the object to be written, and chalk or charcoal dabbed through the pin pricks to leave a pattern that the brush could follow (is that correct Jill/ Brian)

Buy this book if you do nothing else, invaluable to the newbie and the experienced.
http://www.amazon.com/Signwork-Bill-Ste … F8&s=booksA pounce is an outline drawing of artwork that has a line of pinholes along its contour, you then use a ‘pounce bag’ (a muslin bag full of chalk dust) to leave a dot all along the outline.

yep you can still get these little rollers peter that prick the paper ….but you can do it just as easy …and less messy by just chalking the back of the paper ….you know whats great is that you can use the tecnolgy of modern day to make up your pounce on the plotter with the pens instead of your blade π π

After use always wash out in turps till clean, grease them with light grease, tallow, Vaseline etc. work the grease in usning the thumb & fore finger and lay off flat as a chisel. Place in the pencil tray of your signwriters box for safe storage, to re-commission wash the grease out with turps The reason for using grease is any particles of wet paint will never go hard & destroy the brush (real name A PENCIL) it also stops air getting to any wet paint trapped in the pencil feral, which if allowed to dry will cause the pencil to split, the end immediately. thatβs the end of your expensive brush. Follow this guide & you will get years of service from the tool, some of my pencils are 20 years old

Pounces:
I find that using a "school" compass is easier than guiding a pounce wheel round. Just a bit tedious, so put a good play on Radio 4! I use heavy grade tracing paper for the pounce design and then after pricking turn it over and knock off the backs of the little "craters" with some glass paper; it lets the chalk (or whiting) through the holes better. The holes can be 3mm apart for most applications.
If you are pouncing onto a light colour background try using charcoal dust instead of chalk.
We used to have a roomful of the pounce drawings and stored properly some of them were over 20 years old. They are better than pen tracings because they last over many uses and easier to check that every part of the design is copied if you hinge them with masking tape in top corners.
