  • School signs braille detaching

    Hi everybody,
We have made some signs for a school and applied braille to them using a 3M double sided self adhesive tape this was applied to aluminium painted with stove enamel, the braille is now actually coming away from the painted surface, I wonder if it could be that the aluminium was painted only a few days before application. Were talking a way finding system for a whole school here and am quite concerned that the rest could detatch aswell. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Martin, when you say stove enamelled, was it baked?
Is the paint coming off with the adhesive?

Stove enamell (Powder Coated) is cured as soon as it comes out of the oven.

Martin, the only other thing i can think of is faulty tape or tape not fit for purpose 😕 its certainly a strange occurence i would ring manufacturers and ask their advice before as you say the lot starts coming off

Old tape can also give up the ghost, you know that roll thats been in the bottom drawer for the last 2 years.

I have had foam pads die on me with just exposure from a warm summer 😮

My gut says its the paint, but it can be the tape or the cleaners you used too.
Some newer coatings have silicon mixed in with them that makes them more durable, flexible and easier to maintain, but a lot of adhesives won’t stick to them 🙁
Check with the painter to see what specific manufacturer and brand of paint wa used and contact the manufacturer to see what they recommend.
When doing work for schools, I always recommend consealed mechanical fasteners for sign installation. But, when the client wants to cheap out, I recommend a combination of silicon adhesive and VHB tape. Knocking on wood, I haven’t had a problem yet.

My engraving machine can be set up to drill 1mm holes and we then drop the beads in and tap them with a lickle hammer. This locks them in and stops them coming adrift.
