what would be the correct paint for a prepainted surface?
Hello to all
Anyone know of a good paint for a shop sign that is going on a prepainted metal substrate.
The colour as it is is green and it has to be painted white or ‘gold’ and will then have vinyl lettering applied.
How should I treat the surface beforehand to avoid it spoiling?tks Jimmy

Jimmy first of all i would key it with a scotch brite ….then an exterior undercoat and then gloss . I use craig & rose ,johnstone these are good quality .preperation is everything so make sure you rub it down well

Jill… cheers; the problem with this one is the sign isn’t coming down; its to stay up above the window.
I’m just doing it myself and the guy isn’t gonna fork out allot of money.
So I have to do it all on a ladder 😕I will have a go anyway :lol1:

Don’t know the exact situation James, but have you thought about sticking a new substrate over the old and then applying your vinyl to that. Might work out cheaper and produce a better job in the long run.

might be a bit awkward Alistair.
I have tried sliding the metal sheet out of its frame but it wont budge or i would have replaced it totally.
sliding another surface in there I think would be even harder 😕Dont know.
This is my first one so I am open to any suggestions.

can you flood coat it with a section of vinyl to change the colour?
….. just a thought 😮

that might be an option marcella.
I could clean it and take the old lettering off and just cover it.
Frame might be tricky mind you. I wonder what would happen if i removed the bottom section and the sides to make application easier?

This task is simple
As the sign is already painted & I assume is in reasonable condition. Rub it down with wet & dry
rubbing paper 180, when this process is complete wash off & leather dry. When completely dry with a tack rag, go all over the area removing all dust particles. Now paint the sign with grey u/coat to to block green. Let it dry for one day, now rub down this grey with 320 wet & dry with out water tack rag off & paint with a mixed paint half u/coat & gloss. Let dry one day. Now again same process 320 rub down & tack rag off, now a full coat of the gloss paint for the finish. Use quality coach paints such as Keeps/Thornley & Knight / ICI / H.G.M Paints also Quality Professional brushes Hamilton’s / Victor or Harris When applying the coats brush well out evenly across/down/across, always lay off downwards. Don’t be afraid to work the paint or brush on sparingly
Leave to harden for several days before applying vinyl lettering to avoid the possibilities of the paint solvents causing gassing
