  • Printing onto sailcloth question…

Posted by Cheryl Tissington on 4 September 2006 at 21:17

    Hi there,

I’m experimenting with printing onto sailcloth with my versacamm.

Its a thick canvas material with a polyester coating.

I’ve tried some prints, but the ink just bleeds into the material.
Having tried all the various profiles that I’ve got, I’m still not getting a good print.

    Q. Am I putting down too much ink ?

    Q. should I lift the head ?

Any suggestions and profile help appreciated 😕

    Cheers,
    Cheryl 🙂

Chris I have managed to dye sub that material quite well but unfortunatly it fades in direct sunlight after a while. The only way to print on sailcloth is to screenprint.

Um, not really a terrible idea. But you need a media profile that is specifically calibrated for that media (i.e., the sail cloth). Unless you have an existing profile for a similar material, then it is really a shot in the dark.

My first thought is perhaps there is a media profile expert handy (i.e., in your region) that would visit your shop to create the profile. Such a profile would be specific to that type of sail cloth, and that would get your production going.

You can also look into profiling software to create your own profiles. There should be different software available for you from different manufacturers. If you have access to SignLab 7.1, then I would seriously recommend the Novice Calibration Wizard because it walks you through the entire process of profiling your media.

Regardless of what software you are using, CADlink is about to post a guidebook with respect to profiling media, and it has much general information that will be of use to you. I’ll post the link when it’s available.

    Chris,

I’ve been asked for the SA material for sails but don’t have a supplier. Can you let m know who supplies it?

    Thanks
