  • is there an easier way to apply layered up vinyls?

    Stupid question coming up! 😛

Say I am doing a job that consists of a black outline with red text. So I cut my vinyl with the black and red welded and apply using a hinge method. Then when it comes to fitting the red on top…….. I get a bit stuck! Would like a couple of tips on the best way to apply. Currently I will get 2 or 3 letters together and apply wet so I can move it about a bit (without backing paper on).

Surely there is an "easier" way, and a dry method too (?)

Dont like using clear app tape either, but even so, matching up the position of the top layer is quite difficult (unless I am missing something stupid here) with backing paper in place.

Any help appreciated. Just need a few pointers. 🙄

There is a great video demo from Rob, layered vinyl (concentric circles with lettering on) It shows everything. The hinge method is right but you need registration marks to line up the other layers….

It’s always easier with higher contrast colours.

But for those awkward ones….and anything else. A wee ‘cheat’ to working dry with overlays is either to leave an extra bit of vinyl that corresponds to the outline to line them up, lay the text & them peel off the ‘spare’. (registration method)
Or, depending on what application tape you are using, spray the TOP (meths works great – but you gotta be quick or the letters will start to fall off!!) – this’ll make it go a bit translucent – so it’s easier to line it up.
Or just ‘tag’ one end in place (near as dammit) and then sort out the other end – snap off the first & fix that.

Try the line method as in Rob’s demo, but instead of a thin line, thicken it up a bit so it is more of a rectangle. Cut out in both colours. Lay down first layer. Then for second layer, cut out both app tape and backing and vinyl of the box, leaving everything in tact around it, leaving you with a window the size of the box. Position over first layer, tape down a hinge, and away you go… Hope this makes sense.

    ^^^^

    strangely enough…… it does!

I will give it a try next time I am doing this sort of work. Think it might just be time for me to upgrade to a better member level to get access to these demo’s etc :lol1:
