Folded tray sign: Young Components
Posted by Andy Gorman on 31 August 2006 at 08:16Just a bog standard tray, but I did finally get round to trying a v shaped bit rather than a straight one. Much better result. All the folds, especially the corners, are much tidier.
Anyway, the sign is 4.5metres long and is about 20 feet up, so that makes me especially mental for carrying it up a ladder.

Looks neat Andy. You didn’t lug that up a ladder on your own did you? 😮

He’s a tough little bugger Marcella. We breed real men down here in the Midlands. 😀
Nice job Andy.

Andy nice job mate would like to try a v bit but as i have done a few with the round bit and no problems i have got used to it, however you say its better so one day i will get one
and as for getting it up there your NUTS i hate going any higher that 6 feet !!! 🙄 🙄 🙄

nice looking sign andy 😀
yeh…you are nuts doing that up a ladder 😉nik

Thanks. 🙂
Richard, if you do use a v bit, make sure you grind a flat spot on the point 3.5mm wide. It looks massive but is just right to give a perfect fold.

word of advice Andy,
i know a guy who went around fitting signs at height on his own and ended up falling 16` and breaking his foot and ankle on the way down.
DON`T TAKE THE CHANCE mate – its not worth it !!!!
by the way – my foots OK now but i got a bit of a limp and get my lads to fit signs now.
any way great work pal, i need to perfect my corners on folded trays also 😕 😕

Nice job andy, I have started to use the ally returns from SMP for making trays from dibond, not as much mess and dust and maybe a tad quicker
Peter -
ah peter tell me about the mess little bits of aluminium and plastic all over the place even in my socks
i have seen the returns you use and this way you can do ovals if im correct
do you have any pics of the one you have made

Rich the last ones I made I did radiused corners. but I never asked SMP how to do it I just assumed that you cut away the alli to allow it to be bent, it took quite a lot of time to do, but there may be a quicker way.
Here are some pics that I posted earlier

very nice
how do the returns fit to the edge of the dibond
when the returns are fitted can the sign be fitted like a tray i.e screws from top and bottomonly worrie is if you can fit through the returns then its only the returns that are screwed
am i making sense
thanks mate

peter sorry mate just looked at your first post and you give a great description
also sorry Andy for hijacking this post
-
The returns are glued, and yes fitted like a tray, a screw each corner with a white cap (number plate ) finishes nicely.

Sorry as well Andy, but thought it was a relevant comment,
By the way I am giving up one handed fitting, I am just as hard as you, but my bones are getting more brittle as I age 😀
I am not affraid of heights, but terrified of hitting the ground 😉Peter

I found SMP’s Returns very handy on this small shop frontage.
There was very little depth to the frontage and an overhang of timber above. So I made up a timber frame and fitted the Return on the top edge prior to fitting the frame. This was my first shop front, I have played around with making my own trays since & find SMP’s return way quicker and gives a very nice finish.
