  • Shop front fitting help/advice?

Posted by Tim Jay on 11 August 2006 at 13:13

Hi, not sure how to play this one… but I’ve got one of my first jobs lined up. However it’s bigger than I was expecting for the early days. I’ve been asked to do a shop front including replacing the main sign.

I’ve no experince of the ally framed sign boards or the like, what’s available or where to get them from or what cost to expect. Rough dimensions are 14′ x 2′ and when it comes to it I’d like to get some advice to fit it.

A good way to start, is to buy the frame and fascia in.

Cherwell (01280 840297) are one supplier and all you need to do is apply the vinyl and mount the sign.

That way you will see how its made and next time, buy the components. that is if you have the tools and workshop to make it yourself and be cost effective.

just a thought on what peter has said mate…
check suppliers index forum. "AluTrade" will cut and assemble the frame like i have in the demo for you, ready to fit.

and no, i didnt use their idea for demo, it was the other way around actually 😀

Robs corner pieces ar great, but there is an easier way to do it with knock in angles, no drill required. can be permanent or screw in.

peter, does the slot in angles still not require fixing mate?

No just knock em in, but one side can be screwed to facilitate removal.

On the subjest of panatrim frames, I have never fitted one either. Rob’s demo is great, but have a few queries still. I picked up some sample frame from Silwood at Sign UK. It appears that the place for the substrate allows about a 6mm panel. Can you use thinner though, ie. 3mm alumpanel, or 5mm PVC foam or acrylic, and if so what keeps the panel pushed against the front of the frame. Also, I presume you would cut the panel about 5-10mm smaller all the way around to allow for expansion/contraction, but what keeps the sign centralised in the panatrim. Any help apppreciated.

It is fine to use 3mm material. Not foamex though, I would only use 5 or 6mm foamex. 3 mm dibond etc is fine, I fix a hanging strip to the front face and a strip of material to the rear to fill the gap, so the panel dosnt rattle.
as for keeping the panel central there are spring fittings that are inserted in the end rails.
    Normal undersize is 20mm

    quote Peter Normington:

and a strip of material to the rear to fill the gap, so the panel dosnt rattle.

So that’s what the wad of £20 notes is for in the bottom picture then Peter!! 😀 😀 😀

you can actually buy a specific frame, as in Panatrim 5 & Pantrim 3 or Novatrim 5 or 3 depending on who your supplier is. If you are making small signs the 3 version as a smaller face profile (approx 20mm) which gives a more scaled appearance.
