  • how easy is it to stencill onto textured canvas?

I’ve been using vinyl as a stencil to paint onto blind canvas for a while and I’m getting creepage under the vinyl – which is annoying.

I’ll tell you how I’ve been doing it and perhaps someone could point our where I’m going wrong!! Firstly I cut the vinyl and lay it onto the canvas, with application tape on top. Next I iron it into place which helps to anchor it into place. Once I’ve removed the application tape I weed the letters out to produce a stencil then iron it again (with a cotton cloth to protect the vinyl from the direct heat). That’s the preparation done 😉 . After that I apply a pva mix to seal the fabric and stop any bleed and then apply two coats of emulsion. The emulsion isn’t the problem, it’s the pvc sealant that’s creeping under and it doesn’t really dry clear enough to ignore.

What I’d really like is a vinyl with a thick layer of adhesive, something that will stick well onto a textured surface. Any ideas ladies and gents please?

Have a look here for ‘printed’ blinds.

    Hi Dave

I have tried to read that link but it wont let me 👿 You are a Bronze member I presume you can? I am silver and can’t. I have tried stencil mask on canvas and it doesn’t stick.

Do an advanced search for ‘david rogers’ & ‘blinds’.

That’ll be because it’s not canvas that roller blinds are made from. For doing my ‘thing’, it’s some of the flatter 100% ployester roller fabrics we have. the more textured or open the weave the less the mask sticks. IIRC, another member had better adhesion with banner vinyls – I just use what I’ve got most of….and a bit of patience when peeling the tape off (in strips, not as one big piece).

Another member tried this fabric through a digital printer – the results were a bit ‘washed out’, and not very vibrant…was worth a try though.

Cheers Dave. (mod-edit) It’s external awning canvas (which is acrylic canvas really), have you had any joy stencilling onto that?

I may resort to applying the vinyl stencil, then tracing the edge before painting by hand, but that’ll somewhat defeat the object of me doing it in house.

I bought some banner vinyl, may have a go with that. Masking tape sticks best, it’s a shame it can’t be bought with a backing paper and cut 😉

Oh, that stuff’s a real nightmare!!

We get it hand painted by the awning manufacturer!! Great job he makes of it to – but from £7 a letter not especially cheap!

Might be worth trying to ‘size’ it with clear laquer before appying the stencil. * Not tried that, but it seems logical *

    £7!! 😮

We used to use a guy who painted everything by hand, £1.35 per letter regardless of size. Amazing really. He tours the awning suppliers of London writing in their premises.

Having sold our premises in favour of working from home it now causes a problem. Out of interest, which awning system/supplier do you use?

    Hi all
you could try Ludwigs who do all types of cad cut maskling material, they did do one for masking conrete etc which was nice & sticky so may do what you want. Not used them for a while website isn’t working but you could try giving them a call.
