Eco Sol Printers – cheaper printing?
Posted by Daniel Edwards on 4 July 2006 at 07:22Hey Guys,
I’m looking at getting a large format digital printer. I’ve spoken to a few other signwriters and wanted to run a question by the collective.
Are ecosol printers cheaper to run than pigment ink printers?
I’ve been told that the inks are cheaper and they can print onto cheaper media, is this true?
Thanks all 😀
Daniel.

Welcome Daniel. what part of Oz you in?
I purchased an eco solvent roland 540ex. When I upgraded to a true solvent ‘Techink’ bulk ink system, my saving on the true solvent inks were exceptional.
The fact that it is a bulk system tho is the main reason for the savings, not necessarily the type of ink.
True solvent inks can, in my opinion, run on more types of vinyls that eco inks.
I can print on most reflectives for instance (3M and Oracal mainly) that are not recommended to use with some eco solvent inks.
I have spoken to others using the citrisol eco inks, and they report great results, but once again, the savings are with the bulk system, not the cartridge based systems
Hope that helps

Thanks Shane,
I’m in southern Sydney, you’re in QLD aren’t you?
Funnily enough I was out looking at Roland 540 two days ago.
I was unaware of bulk ink systems…I will have to look into that,At this stage true or even mild solvent isn’t really an option for me, I just don’t have the infrastructure to accomodate the fumes. Did you have much of an issue when you changed? I have touched base with the Environ Air Filtration mob, but I’m no sure I can justify the expense
Did you find that the eco sol could print onto cheaper mediums than the pigments?
Daniel.

Hi Daniel,
yeah mate, Logan City, between Brisvegas and the Gold Coast.
The Techink bulk system is imported and supplied by AGS in Sydney and Brisbane. Did you hear AGS have sold to a new bloke? Seems a nice guy.
I sit right beside my printer (within 2 feet) with an exhaust fan in the wall, and a room fan blowing across the printing to ward the exhaust fan. The fumes don’t worry any of us working in the office, but clients some times comment on the smell.
I will buy an air filter at some point in the future, but the costs are hard to justify.
I was not happy with the eco inks for the work I do Daniel (Tourism and Transport), which is why I changed over. That, and the huge cost savings.
Plenty here will disagree, some rave about the eco max inks, but I changed before they were released, so apart from a comparison test I was involved with, I am not really qualified to comment. The old eco inks tho were an issue, which explains why they upgraded them.
The problem I found with the eco inks on cheap media was that they scratched off very easy, especially the cheaper banner materials, but some of the cheaper vinyls too.
Some here tell me that it is different with the eco max roland inks, and I have spoken to others here that have changed over to the citrus ink bulk systems, and they report excellent results too. May pay to give Gary Chapman a call from signwarehouse, as they are the distributors here in oz.
Heard a few bad reports on after sales service from them tho, so you need to be aware of that too.
The boys at AGS are excellent tho, and the sydney office should be able to show you some options if you call in and see them.
Hope that helps.

might be a bit of confusion going on as Shane says the new Roland max inks are the best Roland have come up with and i have no complaints with my sc540 but pigmented inks is normally the name given to water based long life inks which are totally different to solvent based inks and Media o totally different.
