can oracle 651 be used on banners?
Posted by valegraphics on 29 June 2006 at 10:19Hi all,
Ive read on here a few times of people using oracle 651 for banner application.
Is this wise. How long does it last etc?
Cheers
Matt

I HAVE READ THIS BEING USED TOO. MY ADVICE….
DO NOT GO THERE! 😀
IF ITS FOR A DAY OR TWO THEN OK, YOU CAN CHNACE IT, IF YOU WANT…
I THINK THE GLOSS LETTERS ON THE MATT BANNER LOOKS CRAP TOO… BUT THATS JUST MY OPINION.

Since banners (to me) are a temporary sign, I always use 651 on them.
I have never had a problem with this.
I have some yearly event banners and soccer registration banners done with Oracal that are several years old.
They get brought back faithfully to me for date changes.
The Oracal comes off OK with heat from a hair dryer and leaves very little residue.
Remember that these are at most left out for a month at a time.
Oracal 651 is all I use on Corosigns as well.
I believe its age limit is 3-5 years. It would probably last longer than the banner material if using Poly banners.
I always buy bandana (banana) banner material on a roll that you can cut to size. It has top and bottom grommets spaced every 18" or so.
Together the two products make great, durable banners.

I don’t use it on banners either Matt, except banana banners for a quick temp sign. I’ll use 551 too for a quickie.
Essentially, and technically, 651 is not for anything long term banner as the plasticisers will affect the glue. The difference between banner vinyl and other vinyl is the adhesive.
Banner vinyl’s adhesive works with the migration of plasticisers, but other vinyl don’t, which is what causes it to fail.
Certainly our hot weather here would be detrimental to the finish as the heat speeds up the migration process.
I agree with Jill tho, certainly use it for short term stuff, and on corex/corflute boards, but for cheap and cheerful stuff, and nothing long term or multi layer.
Banana banner does not have the same issues as poly banner material, and I’m not sure why, but I have had some huge failures in summer here using 651/641 material in the distant past.

Oracal do 451 series banner film??? yes folks it’s in the title and that’s precisely what it’s for and does it well, the 651 is a short term option for corri board etc… but i wouldn’t put it on a banner because it will not last long term but yeah if someone wants a cheep as chips banner i will oblige but would recommend 451 for a more permanent option and better standard of finish

love….Jilli agree 99% !!
651 is 4-5yr ! since most peole perceive a banner to be a ‘cheap’ from of advertising, why spend more on a more expensive 451 material when the banner is still only worth x amount !

We’ve been using it for over ten years and as long as you heat it with a hot air gun and use decent banners it will last as long as anything else !
Give the customer an empty vinyl tube and tell them to roll it around that when not in use.
