Excuse my ignorance but I had to do a web search for "smart knives" 😳

I take it that it’s these things?
    http://www.dorotape.co.uk/pages/group/details/Smart_Knife.html or similar.

I probably wouldn’t use them myself as the cost saving would be negligable for me as I like to hold a couple of blades for my machine in stock ‘just in case’.

i could be wrong, but i recon these are the smart knifes manufactured by edward mathias. i used them for a couple of years, they are good. however, i found my biggest niggle on the whole was "pop the old in jiffy bag, return it and in comes the new" i much rather today, chuck the old and stick new one in as and when i need it. i switched back to buying direct from graphtec and Roland for our blades but then switched about a year ago to printone who now offer the same quality of blade, brand new for only about £7ish each…. "cannie whack it!" as they say up here 😉 :lol1:

I’ve used the Edward Mathias Smart Knives for 3 or 4 years and never had any problems with them. As Robert says it is a bit of nuisance ending them back for exchange but I’ve now got 7 blades so I send 3/4 back at a time and I’ve always got a couple of new in the drawer.
Don’t know if they do a sandblast blade, they are very helpful if you have a query.

I’ve using the smart knives for years on my Graphtec and it is so easy to swap knife types ie vinyl to flock to sandblast as the whole lot is changed, no messing with knife depth all is preset and popping the old ones into a supplied, pre addressed jiffy bag, fixing a stamp and posting is not the hardest job I do in a day.

Like David R I also have never heard of these. D
o they last as long as normal blades? I get loads more life out of my blades by adjusting cutting depth, but it seems you can’t do this with the Smart Knife?

Been using them for just over a year, and seem to get over the problem of the blade sticking in the holder (there has been a few help cries on here due to sticking blades).

Can’t see how putting the blade in a jiffy bag to send off is difficult or a pain 😕

    Cheers

I hadn’t heard of them either but on looking at the link I think they look OK but not sure if I’d find them particularly beneficial over ordinary blades.
I’m a cheapskate …. I get my old blades sharpened! A couple of quid a blade and they’re as good as new. 😀

    Hi All

They do last a long time – in fact I usually get them exchangd before I notice any real detriment to cut quality – don’t know what the bother is about sending them back in the supllied and pre-labelled jiffy envelopes.

Have exchanged about 10 now and I like the way you don’t have to mess around setting the blade depth (OK not hard but sometimes you can mess around fine tuning it for ages until 100% happy) – just pop the holder in and cut immediately.

    Hi
been using smart knives for 4- 5 years good as gold, last for ages, have a stock of 6 for two cutters. 2 in the machines 4 instock when i have 4 usedones i send them back. If you ever speak with Harry from Edward Mathias you’ll find out the is company supplies most OEM blades so oneway or another you end up using is blades you just pay more for the OEM name.

    We use them.

I like the way that it is impossible for a dozy operator to get the depth horribly wrong when installing a new blade. Take away as many sources of potential problems as you can – that’s my philosophy.

Cost? Well, blades aren’t the biggest overhead we have. Time, on the other hand, is. Anything reduces the amount of time spent on installation or in sorting out problems caused by incorrect settings has to be good.

    A happy bunny. 😀
