  • Cut lines not meeting when cutting vinyl?

Posted by P wilk on 13 June 2006 at 19:26

I have just tried my first few cuts with my newly acquired mini plotter

When i attempt to weed the excess vinyl, some of the cuts do not join up; making life difficult. I read that adjusting the offset should sort this problem

But by doing so, what am I actually doing…is it tilting the knife slightly….and if so, how will i know by how much without making loads of trial cuts. Once set will I have to reset this offset every time I use the plotter

    sorry for the dumb questions

    Paul,
Offset has been covered a few time before, for more in depth explanation try a search. but basics of offset are..
The plotter uses the centre of the blade shaft as a datum point, but because the blade is ground at an angle the point or cutting edge is not at the centre, so by setting the offset, you are telling the plotter to allow a small diference between the centre of the shaft and the cutting edge. once set, you should be able to save the setting as default. If using a new blade the default setting should be ok. in practice if I need to change the offset, its time for a new blade.

edited to add a link to macky d’s excellent explanation

    Thanks…that seems straight forward

Even tho’ its a new machine, I’ve put a min of offset on and it seems to have helped with the quality of the cuts. I’ve done about a dozen of different shapes and intricasies tonight until I’ve got what looks to me as a decent product 😀

    cheers
