  • is it possible to fix LEDs with Halo effect?

Posted by Andy Gorman on 2 June 2006 at 10:13

Some bloke wants me to fit lighting to his existing stainless steel built ups to achieve a halo effect.

How easy is this? Is it even possible? Ideas?

I assume some kind of diffuser would be required on the back of the letters, as I’ve seen some locally that don’t give a halo effect, just a reflection of dots on the panel.

    Help……..

    Andy,

Possible? Yes. Easy? depends on a number of things like running the power supply to the letters, depth of returns & stroke width. I would strongly recommend that you used a diffusing back for the letters and you’d need to take the letters down and take patterns for this (you may also need to drill the returns so that you can fix the backs into place once you’ve got them).

If you decide to go ahead with this I’d be happy to offer any help and advice you may need.

    Good Luck!!

fitting LED’s is a doodle mate… remove built-ups and take away. install the LED’s with vhb tape, "they chain link". drill holes in fascia and drop each jumper cable through the hole to the back of the sign. connect them to transformer and power supply to transformer.
that’s really how it "should" work. but seldom goes just to plan. as guy says, defuser helps heaps. but getting a good template for the letters "already up" could be more hassle than its worth. (unless getting paid good money that is) 😀 you can sometimes get away without defusers, that takes careful positioning of the LED’s. If you do this it can sometimes be better because the bare led’s are that bit brighter.
the real problem with LED’s i see is dark backgrounds. i did a nice sign for a Friend with a brown backing board with white led’s… in short… it was crap. no halo, just a start light. i was using a defuser and that did nothing for it. you could actually see it was defuser from the ground. anyway… if dark background, ditch it and go for neon, light coloured background, you should be fine!

nearly forgot…. as guy says, check you can get to the rear of the sign easily before taking this on. "you need to hide all the wiring some place. 😀

    Hi all
if you don’t use a diffuser check warranty on the LEDS as circuit board LEDS are supposed to be enclosed in the letter by means of the diffuser.

    Put Neon in it!!
Don’t need a diffuser, just Clear Tray back………….. (hot)

Easy Peasy!! putting Led’s in so many different types the choice is yours, Make some more money on the job, show the customer some RGB Led’s you can then colour change, customer will be well impressed…………. 😛
