You automatically have copyright over any original work you produce.

One way to establish proof of when you originated a design is is to mail a copy to yourself (The postmark establishes the age of the design). You then keep the unopened letter containing the design in case you ever need to prove when this was first created.

If you want to register a business name the easiest way is to register it as a limited company. You don’t have to trade as this company (it can be what is known as a "dormant" company) but the name is then no longer available for any one else to use. The downside is you will have to make an annual return each year and pay a small fee even if the company is dormant (this is simple and easy to do however). Similarly – register any website addresses that contain your business name.

You can of course take out a trademark with the patents office but this can be quite an expensive exercise and I would question how necessary this is.
