  • Multi-layer job…what type of application tape to use?

I was just wondering what type of application tape do you folk use when laying up multi-layer jobs.

Sometimes when I am pulling the appication tape off, it looks like it is pulling the bottom layer of vinyl with it a little. I am laying up the vinyl and sending off to the customer ready for him to apply.

Should I be using low tack for this process?

I use medium tack paper application, but its a matter of what you prefer, I know alot of people like clear. Personally I dont layer vinyl on the bench to send out to customers as the customer will have terrible bubble problems when putting it on. I would send out the job as individual layers with registration marks on them, with a note saying how to layer vinyl and when they cant do it, I let them ring me and I charge them for doing it for them :lol1:

    Me too Jayne.

But on the odd occassion I do it, I use clear application tape over 3M 7725 which has the clear plastic backing as well.

I only pre mask the top colour, and then I lay each colour over the colour below it. That way the premask is done once.

Not good if you have little bits coz it can waste a lot of material, but I’ll charge the customer for the waste anyway.

If you do need to do it with little bits of colour thru the design, use the same 3M material and low tack application paper tape. Because the 3M is plastic backed, you can lay each colour wet and have no problems at all.

When you have finished it, dry it, do a final premask, and send it out.

    Easy Peasy!

    Cheers
    Shane

i’d be interested to know if any one has used a clear app tape that doesnt stretch, damned stuff screwed a job up for me the other day, had shrunk back within 15 mins and mis-aligned the text ! hate it, gonna bin the rest now.

stick to reg marks and regular paper tape, med tac should do fine, i don’t have lots of different types, just the one !

Mate I have no problem with conform clear tape.

Heaps of probs in the past with poly clear, but conform has not been a problem for me at all.

Is it that hard to pull of the roll? If you do the roll on a roll trick, you shouldn’t have any issues if you are desperate.

    Cheers for the feedback folks.

I only experienced the issues with my last batch of application tape…not sure why? 😀
