Does anyone know why I can view a PDF with embedded fonts fine using Adobe Reader but when I load or import the same file into Corel or Illustrator it can’t find the fonts and asks for substitutes. The font information must be there somewhere because I can zoom right in on text and it is still sharp.
Any information or work-around would be greatly appreciated.

    Frog,

I’m stabbing in the dark here, but I generate pdfs in Illustrator and have the option to "retain Illustrator editing capabilities" when I save them. It may be that this is where the font information is lost.

Whether I am right, or whether it is something else, it is a feature I like because it means my customers can view my pdfs on screen perfectly but it makes life a bit more difficult for my competitiors to copy my work.

If you have Acrobat – save as eps with fonts embedded – import eps into Draw as ‘postscript interpreted’ – text to curves – fonts shape should be there although not editable text OR install a postscript driver and set to file – print to that with a ‘ps’ extension, import that to Draw.
X3 does a much better job of importing pdf with the text to curves option being in the import dialogue box. Fonts can be a problem if the pdf has come from Word or Quark and the user has used the italic or bold function rather than the proper font. PM me if you can if you are still having problems with this file

I request all files sent to me have fonts converted to curves. Then the pdf will never be a problem with adobe reader. Makes it a bigger file tho.

If you have SignLab 7.1, then you have several PDF import options with respect to embedded font information.

    • Import text as graphics
    • Import the entire embedded font (trivial)
    • Import the font subset that has been embedded
    • Choose to load a font file that was provided with the PDF file (say from Xpress or InDesign)

Keep in mind that a given PDF can have either a subset of the font (i.e., just the letters used), or the entire font embedded. This depends on the settings used when saving the PDF. Embedding a subset makes for a smaller file size, but having the entire font allows you more freedom when editing (i.e., having the full set of letters available so you can add type).

    Hope that helps,

To the best of my knowledge (limited) SL in one of the few programmes that uses embedded fonts that way ie usable and editable even if you don’t have the font on your system. May not help too much as I think the original question was regarding Corel V12 or Illustrator. Corel certainly is not as flexible as this.

Quite true. My comments were a "shot in the dark" in case Frog Man did indeed have more tools at his disposal.

I have not seen a quick way to check user profiles on this forum. Is there a section that I have overlooked?

SignLab sounds the goods but I don’t have it 🙁
I thought I had a version of Acrobat kicking around somewhere but can’t find it.
Alan, the postscript printer output to a file, have you tried that ?
    Does it work OK ?

Frog, you might be thinking of Acrobat Reader which is a freebie download. Acrobat is great at the EPS trick.. however not always perfect.
