hey all, about to quote on a job for around 100 small foamex (simapor brand) pvc foam board,

i need them in three colours, i think t’ll be a pain, and uneconomical to cover 30 of each in different colours, so was thinking of spraying them,

can i use automotive aerosol sprays ? primer and then a top coat ? and then simply stick vinyl numbers ontop ?

    just a thought ?!!

    thanks in advance,

Hugh what size are we talking about? could you not just order the foamex in the colours you want?

Hugh we used to give Foamboard to the local body shop to spray with car paint so shuldn’t be a problem, don’t think you even need to prime just Scotchpad.

they’re only 210 x 135mm aprx. i’d need a minimum of 2 coloured 8×4 foamex, and it aint cheap ! i’d only use a third of it for the job, not economical

one chopped up white sheet, and £20 of spray paint is still cheaper than one coloured 8×4 ! and will give me all the bits i’d need, 60 then need painting of flooding (or would it be considered ‘dowsing’ on such a small sheet !!!)

Hugh, why not flood the area you need, then cut into the pieces? A metre of vinyl is quicker and probably cheaper than spray painting.

beat me too it peter…..but it would depend on how thick the foamex was especially if cutting by hand 😀

a good example of where the screenprinting comes in…i would just tape up a screen and print them all 😀

Just had a quick look at the Europoint prices on here Hugh, and the cost difference (on 5mm) is only £6.83 per sheet.

Bit of "false economy" in my opinion if you think you can spray them (including labour) for less than that!

don’t forget chaps (and chapesses) that i’m not yet uksg.

my supplier for white 5mm foamex is £23.66, a coloured sheet of the same is 44.67, big difference !!

i just figured that i can get everything outta one white sheet, and paint / flood (supplier is cutting up as i can’t cat so many accurately and quickly) each blank,

if i had to use coloured, i’d be loking at £44 + the cut charge, x 2, so prob £100 for two sheets + vat, + the white sheet, and only 1/3rd of each will be used, i know i’d have the offcuts for signs, but it doesnt make the price look any god to the customer,

oh eck ! hate these kinda things !

    Hugh,
I understand your dilemma, I’ve been there myself. I agree with Peter, a couple of metres of vinyl is easier and cheaper even if you add a £10 delvery charge. You can still use the white foam – and you don’t finish up with multi coloured trousers and shoes, not to mention the state of the inside of your nostrils!

lol if i had a guilotine, i’d have it floded and be chopping up as we speak, but i’m paying the supplier to chop it into little pieces for me,

i can do it for pence in correx, but it suddenly gets very pricey in foamex !

Change your supplier Hugh…… shop around, I have just looked at two other suppliers (apart from Europoint), nowhere near that price for coloured, £28.24 and £29.00.

At these prices, it’s even cheaper than "flooding" a sheet, and a lot less hastle.

Don’t forget, it’s okay just pricing the materials here to "flood" a sheet, you also need to take into account your labour, all of a sudden, this is a very expensive exercise!!

Surely though, you should have looked at the costs of coloured foamex before you quoted the job??

i haven’t yet quoted for the job, i’m working on that, it just seems rediculously expensive for what they need, which are essentially a set of numbers !

i have looked at other local suppliers for sheet materials before, they either can’t / won’t ship big sheets, so time i go collect, or pay stoopid delivery charges, this lot aren’t farout, and deliver themselves up to 10×6 for a fiver

edit, jsut spotted the 3mm in the catalgue, that’s £27 a sheet, is this what you meant ? i was pricing 5mm originally. not sure why there’s such a huge jump in price though.

Hugh, just PM’d you, the prices I listed were for 5mm.

    "Expensive" compared to what?

If you get the supplier to cut to size, they’re not shipping a big sheet, 210mm x 135mm could be boxed easily for courier delivery.

Okay, I’m guessing that your needing 30 out of a sheet, so based on that, your looking at less than £1 per piece (with the off-cut as a bonus), you would in fact get 99 out of a sheet (do they buy these regularly?) which would be less than 30p a piece.

I personally would price the job based on coloured foamex, save the hastle and the labour!

The prices you are paying for foamex are ridiculous. You should not buy at printed catalogue prices but negotiate a substantial discount on foamex.

I suggest getting on the phone to 2 or 3 suppliers and ask for their best prices. I bet you get a result.

thanks chris, will act on that in a mo,

    Hi Peter,

the foamex price on coloured sheets does seem silly, admittedly,

a plain white sheet in 5mm 8×4 is 23.66, not particularly expensive, but for some reason the coloured is too high at £44.67 (matt) or £55 gloss, so yeah, i figure i ought to try and get a better price on that, most of their stuff is reasonable enough to make it worth using them though.
