  • how do i fit vinyl over a domed surface?

Posted by Kenny Ramsey on 7 May 2006 at 10:45

    Hi all.

I’m not sure if what I’m asking is possible.

Basically, I have been asked to make stickers to cover existing wheel centres. The new stickers are silver background with a red and chrome logo. The problem is though that the wheel centres are heavily domed so a straightforward application is out of the question.

Am I missing a trick here? Is there an easy way to apply the stickers?

The wheel centres are 60mm in diameter. I wouldn’t be too concerned normally but it could lead to quite a few orders and not just for the wheel centre badges.

    Many thanks…again 😀

normally the dome is a add on if not you have a problem.

domed stickers must sit on a flat surface. i do a fare amount of special one off wheel centres and not had a problem yet.

    Thanks Chris.

The problem is they are basic vinyl (ie non domed) stickers to cover over existing wheel centres which will remain in place. Thats where the domed part comes in

On one set I did we popped the domed section off and applied to the non domed surface underneath.

Are you printing the replacement? or doing a multylayer vinyl?

At 60mm, if you use a good cast vinyl it should be no problem to apply, however if you are supplying for self fit They will c0ck it up.

    Just my tuppence worth……

I read that your stickers are "silver with a red & chrome logo"…

as Peter says – a good cast vinyl will conform with a little patience & warmth – well the silver & red will. Chrome….never heard of one that stretches or that could stand up to the abuse of being a wheel decal.

If these are printed colours – they may (OK, will) fade out & deform as you apply them.

how domed are they over the 60mm, what height do they get to? There is domed and then there is doMed.

if it is only a mild curve, you shouldn’t have any problems using RTapes chrome, as it is on a cast base from what I’m told.

As other have said tho, a major dome would be an issue.

got a photo of the wheel cover?

just re read the post. 😳

If it has to be layered, I’d use a good quality cast silver to lay over the base, then layer the logo? Hard to be definative when we don’t know what the logo is tho.

    Sounds time consuming tho.
