Perhaps you should mention who you rang…..

Anyway, an 8mm stripe is a very different thing from say, a 500mm roll. It is a completely different process to produce a pin stripe, and not something I would expect the average vinyl supplier to supply. You can’t lathe a roll of vinyl to 8mm – it has to be sliced in a linear fashion.

Oh for the days of Autac….. 😉

Hi Andy. Mmmm When i visited vinyl logistics, i spoke to one of the storemen, and they showed me how they cut a roll down to 5mm. No problem there. So i just presumed that most suppliers were capable?

I’m not saying that they were’nt helpfull, cause they allways are. Rant over.

Problem is – how would you fit an 8mm wide roll into your cutter? Surely it would topple sideways so how would you get it to track straight 😕

😛 Very good phill. I want to fit a length approx 5-10mm in width and approx 4mts long as a coach line beneath a large stripe i’m going to fit.

Otherwise i will have to charge the customer the earth to waste the majority of a roll whatever width the roll maybe. So in essense i want to fit as a sort of "go faster" stripe(hate that term) strasight from the roll. Hope i’ve made meself clear??

    Hi Matt
let me know what colour you need. I don’t use the same vinyl as you, but may still be able to help.

I use pinstripes from 6mm upwards.

I’ve got a massive stock that I hold for the marine industry. I’ve also got a small pinstripping cutter that will produce small quantities.

Happy to help if I can.

    Cheryl 😀

Hi Cheryl, I am doing quite a few 5-10mm stipes these days, just wondered how you go about cutting them? Do you do 5m lengths and join anything longer (and tell the customer there will be a join), or cut them in 10m so no join. Just had another one in today 8m stipes.

    Cheers

    Hi Dave,
no, I can cut any length. I usually sell a minimum of 10m at a time to make it worth while.

I can cut down to about 6mm minimum. Anything less is just thread 😮

If I’m doing a refurb on a Beneteau or something similar, I get the customer to measure up between the windows on the cabin and the water lines etc and then I just cut the stripes that they need to order.

I wonder if the people who smashed up their brand new £250,000 Beneteau yesterday will need some new stripes…..I’ll call them :yikes:

I’m off to The Isle of Wight next week to hopefully mix business with pleasure. I just hope nobody offers me a ride on their yacht……..I get really sea sick :vomit:

    Oh dear……

    Cheryl : 😕

Do you guys not have access to 3M pin stripe material over there?

I buy 6mm up to 150mm in rolls off the shelf here.

Just thought I’d put my bib in.

    Have a good break Cheryl.

Thanks Shane…….I’m going to try out the new motorhome ! 😎

I’m not too sure about the pinstriping from 3m. There are a couple of companies in the UK that will slit rolls of vinyl for you but it costs a fortune.

I looked at buying a proper roll slitting machine myself, but the cost was quite high.

I imported a small hand operated vinyl slitter through a contact from the USA a while back and now just produce whatever I need myself.

Its quite a big part of my business, so I may look at it again later on.

For the time being, I’ll just use what I’ve got, anyway, the bank accounts empty because I’ve just bought a new versacamm ! 😀

I remember years ago there was a little accident damage repair place near to us that had a little desk mounted "machine" for making coachlines.

Imagine a little miniature plotter (about 6 inches wide) with no electrics, just a little side adjustable blade and a side spacer that you adjusted to the width of the coachline you wanted.

You simply offered in your 1,2, 3, 4 or 5 inch wide stripe and manually pulled it through to give you perfect little coachline in seconds.

We have a shredder here at work that gives perfect 4mm stripes if you put some vinyl through it. It begins to track out after 3 metres tho 😀

Rod, I have a little vinyl slitter like the one you described but it is only about 3" wide, have used it to produce quite a few stripes. As you say it is just a blade that you set at what ever thickness you want your stripe and then manually pull the vinyl through to produce your stripe.

I can now see loads of people going out and buying paper shredders so they can produce 4mm stripes :lol1:

i wonder who’ll buy the cross cut shredder ? there’s an idea, cross cut all your old vinyl and sell it as confetti ?

Sorry it`s patented mate. You can try it but you have to send me 4p per stripe. :lol1:

Rod, sorry I have no idea if it has any markings on it and I am not even sure if I still have it. If I have still got it I wouldn’t know where to start looking for it.
I am not 100% sure but I think I got it from Hexis, I would give them a ring and ask. Mind you looking at the post peter put up the 6" slitter looks like a much better option.

a ronon slitter mate… 50mm… they only stock these ones so you just have to ask for a 50mm or 150mm

I think the 50mm was about $45 from memory. Purchased it a few years ago now…

    Thanks Martin & Shane
My experience with spandex does not instill much confidence in them at all.
I bought My plotter from them and I virtually had to beg for the purchase. Despite the fact that they had been given the dollar amount in full delivery could not be made untill I supplied them with a purchase order with my business logo on it. It appears I may have changed my mind and caused them some inconvenience. All this even though they had the cold hard cash.
    cheers Mike

I would think twice buying a glass of water from spandex, even if I was thirsty.

I buy from them as the absolute last resort. They demonstrate zero appreciation for any business they get. Don’t get me started 👿

If it was only 4 or 5 metres i think I would have trimmed it from the edge of the roll by hand, saving the rest of the vinyl…quicker than a phone call to the supplier 🙂

yes glen that’s what I do now.
Have even made a slitter out of vinyl and knife, but I like the sound of Shanes.

Michael, if you want stripe material, ring Sharon at SAL Design in Beenleigh. She supplies everything from fineline 1/8th multi stripe to 6" stripe material from Avery or 3M. She supplies Chevron tape too (Left and Right). She supplies most of the car repair companies that replace pin stripes at panel shops.

She supplies all over OZ and New Zealand.

Give her a call on 3807 3111, tell her I told you to call. She is a sweetheart, and very experienced. She has been laying stripes on cars longer than I can remember. You might get her mum (barbara) or dad (alan) or one of her staff, but they are very helpful.

She’ll send you a catalogue if you ask nice.

    Hope that helps.
