  • Pricing Vinyl job- how much would you charge for this?

Posted by Joe McNamara on 1 May 2006 at 07:47

    Hi all,

I have a job to do for a regular customer this week.

I really don’t have the time to spare for it and they just told me about it today.

It’s two sides of a trailer 10′ x 12′ flood coat black vinyl onto the sides of a trailer ( lots of rivets) then put white cut vinyl text over the black ( 3 lines of text about 2′ tall.

They can’t get the trailer ’till tomorrow and it needs to be ready for friday.

If it was for anyone else I’d have said no way, but it is for a very high profile client of theirs and would look good on the portfolio ( huge company )

Anyway, what would you charge for the job considering the following:
1 A rush job with a tight schedule
2 I have too much work at present so this just adds to it
3 It’ll probably have to be done outside of normal hours

I’m hovering around the 600 quid mark……am I over the top or too cheap????? I would like to do the job, but won’t be too sad if I don’t!

    Cheers
    Joe

considering all the rivets, i think i’d be looking into spray painting the body black, leave a few days and then apply the text, or if it’s a white body, apply text, spray black, and remove text,

rivets take an age to do in my experience, and i only had about 15 to contend with !

i dunno where to really start on pricing though, sorry !

If you don’t have time to do it charge accordingly.

    Say $500 squid a side?

It is full of rivets, you don’t want to do it – so make it worth it if they insist.

Would you be happy to work outside of your hours on a pain in the buttocks job for only $300 squid a side?

Lots of issues there. Don’t get sucked into the ‘very important client’ thing.

Just my perverted point of view. 😀

    Simon.

Can the rivets be removed and re-screwed over the vinyl?
Some trailers have removable rivets (o joy!) and it looks kinda nice done that way.
A torx bit works if the rivets have dimples.
    I’s charge a minimum of $1500, with $500 thrown in for a
    PITA/rush/off hours fee.
They will either go for it or not.
Better you to have a fat wallet if you’re going to be bothered with it.
Either that or let some chump do it cheap.
Methinks they’ll pay YOU for it tho since they are a good client.

Call me crazy, but I’m coming up with about $3200 US, for 2 sides, 9′ x 12′.
You’re basically installing a full wrap, without the printing, plus vinyl graphics.
For a typical non-rush job, I would estimate about $10 sq. ft.. Then, add another 50% for the rush fee to cover the additional expenses, such as rush shipping fees for materials and overtime pay for you and your employees.

    Good luck,

Thnks for the replies so far guys ( and you Jill ! )

Anyone else fancy a go at pricing this from the UK ?

    Cheers
    Joe

PS my earlier price should have been 700 but I hit 6 instead of 7 and I still think that’s too cheap???

This might not help but i would be looking at £500 labour plus materials etc

Materials would be coming in at £85 so I’m guessing it at 585 plus vat just a thought. That’s not using expensive cast just 5to7 year vinyl

10 x 12 = 3 panels hung like wallpaper each side. fitting – 1 hour, both sides. same with text… total approx 2hours fitting… yes there is gonna be messing with rivettes but not too big a deal.
your problem is outside fitting, wind and dust. if not rain!
its a wrap but not recesses etc just flat… so something like 751 will do perfect, thats taking rivvetts into account.

ide go with £600… i dont know how many lines of text etc as im doing this blind but £600 is ok as a favour and tell them thats what it is… ide NOT give them 30 days though… COD.

I would be realistic, spraying the base colour would be the best option. and cheaper, that would also be a way of "delaying" applying the text, while he paint dries. ( if you are dealing with a company that places importance on its image, spraying looks far better than vinyl over rivets)
Its not a printed wrap, so you cant expect wrap prices, I would be mor thanhappy with £800 for the job, 6hours work max including design cutting prep etc. and about 100 squid max materials.

Dont unscrew any rivets though, if they are left handed threads, you may have problems getting them back in.

    :lol1: :lol1: cheeky bugger :lol1: 😉

joe, doing this sorta work isnt as difficult as you might think.
the real problems is location and access. a good set of tresstles and your laughing…
wind, rain, dust etc all hampers the process… if you have a nice clean body, tressles setup and a second pair of hands on a good day, it shouldnt be a problem.
yes, the rivettes are the killer here but ide say you could apply the big panels faster than multiple lines of text onto vinyl.

have a look at the nel mcandrew video vinyl application in video forum. look at the timer in the corner. you will see start to finish i took about "2 minutes" for the same size of panel you will be applying. in fact, its probably same size of truck as it takes about 3-4 panels on them.

p.s. use a new felt squeegee for this… glides over the rivettes better. 😀
