Pop-Up banner Frames
Posted by Steve Morgan on 28 April 2006 at 12:05I’d like to make up a sample pop-up banner to show a new customer. Can anyone recommend a supplier of the hardware for pop-up or roll-up banners, preferably one that wont fall apart?
I recall a topic some while back about banners with curled edges, I’ll be printing on a VersaCamm, can anyone recommend a non curling material, couldn’t find the topicChris Dowd replied 19 years, 8 months ago 6 Members · 18 Replies -

there are pop up witch are the big back drop things and the rool ups that are the graphic in a cassette that pulls up to display.
best pull up for the versa material is from kentmere and does stay flat no end of people selling the base units.

Thanks very much Chris, that’s a big help, the correct choice of paper is far more important at the moment. As you say there are lots of suppliers of the cassettes and frames, is this a case of one big factory somewhere in the Far East churning them out for everyone?

its not a paper its more like a mylar film with a solvent coating i use the max inks and do not laminate. not the cheepest but works and prints very well

As it’s been said, there is no end to firms offering roll-up hardware. There’s a lot of good stuff out there and a lot of stuff which is little better than junk.
If your client is looking for a serious piece of hardware that will last 10+ years you may want to consider BannerBug. Lots of firms sell this product. BannerBug is nice because unlike a lot of the generic stuff they list have every piece of the unit available as a replacement part.
Another unit that is said to be very good is the GrandStand from Drytac. Again, this would be a premium product.
That being said, a lot of people who do roll-ups more casually, prefer not to go for a BannerBug and to buy these flimsy units made in Asia. Some of these are 1/4" the cost of the BannerBug. If you have a customer who shows a high-standard of care you may be able to get away with one of these units. We’ve sold a number of the budget units but have elected to stop this practice.
As for media, I can’t comment on which to use for an Eco-solvent printer as I believe that for this application dye based printers are the way to go.
Good luck finding a good roll-up.

give easystands a call mate… roll-ups and all else catered for….
as for media. Chris, you need to give europoint a call mate.
not sure if its open to all just now, if not call Glasgow ask for Cameron steer explain i have told you about the new solvent roll-up stand material. i bet your uksg price beats all hands down as will the quality of the product. 😉 not sure i should say this, but if i am wrong i will buy you a bottle of bubbly at signuk 😉 :lol1: -
Seen and tried the Kernow media your on about Rob, yes it’s a good price, however, I personally do not think it’s anywhere near the quality of Kentmere’s Opaljet.
In saying that, we had the Kentmere rep in the other day and he left us a sample roll of a new media they have just launched to compete with the Kernow prices (no prices from Kentmere for that one yet!).
Still believe whichever media you use it will still need laminating
Interesting……. both Kentmere and Kernow are exhibiting at Sign UK

ive tried both with regards to print quality chris, thought the europoint stuff was head and shoulders above kentmere on quality and price.
this was not tested on abrasion resistance because as you know… my sample was NOT returned 😕 :lol1:
thing im puzzled at,,, why does kentmere now launch an improved version of their own product but cheaper? is it because they can or because they are being forced by competition?
regardless…. the best media will win.
my own thoughts one the matt stuff was poor in comparison to gloss. sign uk "i think" will be a reall wealth of info for me/the site. -
I’m with Rob on this one………..
The sample I received was the solution to all the problems with the Kentmere, Hexis and Easystand material problems.
Still to post the results…………
Even with a matt laminate the colours are vibrant….. not normally available for solvent machines.
Cheers

Whats the point in the Gloss if (as the majority do) your going to apply a laminate?
I didn’t say that Kentmere’s new product was improved Rob, I said it was to compete with the Kernow price, and having not yet had the chance to try it, I can not comment!!

Hope you got your sample a lot quicker than we did Andrew, over 3 weeks and we had to chase it 4 times!!

The flat lifeless colour become flatter and more lifeless with the matt laminate….
The vibrant colour acts like the print from the HP

sorry chris, I’m speed reading the post mate… 😕
i know what you say on the gloss and the need for laminate. however…
applying the gloss to a Matt print doesn’t bring the vibrancy of the print up any… i tried… yes you have a gloss finish but poor as way of sharp edges and vibrant colours.
i tried kentmere and hexis and both sooked the colours into the material.
price is irrelevant these days as we are normally talking a pound or so or pence… but weighed up against better quality prints and lower costing i couldn’t complain.
as i said though, i haven’t checked on abrasion because the roll up i didn for demo purposes was not returned. that said, i have 4 roll ups to do Wednesday, so ill report back. -

Having ran over 1000 metres of Opaljet in the last 3 weeks on our Seiko Colourpainter, I really can not call it "flat" or "lifeless"!!

Chris,
I’m not making sense [after reading my post]
I loved the material………… getting the right profile was important
Cheers
[still have a Kentmere roll I’m determined to finish]

Chris,
told you I was coming across the wrong way………..
Cheers 😀

Chris, yes we laminate all our roll-up’s (unless somebody wants a real "low cost" option, then we print onto total block banner, does curl a bit at the edges, however, ideal for use it once or twice and throw it away!).
The reason we laminate, well I suppose it’s just incase a bit of grit or anything get’s onto the print or into the cassette, just adds that bit extra protection. Saying that, we have sent an unlaminated print out with our local Ultima rep to "give it a hammering" and see what it comes back like! From experience, you can scratch unlaminated Kentmere and Kernow with you fingernail.
