vehicle graphics: own van
Posted by David Rogers on 21 April 2006 at 15:25Got the van almost finished – just a bit of digi-print for the rear to do.
This is fairly inkeeping with the rest of the fleet of ‘wee blue vans’ that circulate Tayside, N. Fife, Aberdeen & (recently) Glas/Edin area on behalf of the parent company, and this HAD to have their stuff on it as more often than not it’s "borrowed" to transport some oversized canopy/awning so they wanted to turn up in something that looked like it belonged to them.
Latitude on the format was also somewhat limited as ALL company vehicles have to look basically the same.
I’m pretty pleased with the finished result although there are a few niggly bits I might address at some point if I don’t like them.Used nikalite(?) reflective for chevrons & as a halo for the main text – it cuts well, is super sticky but will be a right PITA to remove should we need to. The use of reflective on the vehicle sides complies with the vehicle lighting regs, so no worries there!
The only downside to having a liveried van is it is SO recognisable – now I’m on best behaviour when in traffic!!

If you open up the TOP photo you’ll see it’s just the outline of the main ‘C…S… .com’ in the relection from the flash/sunlight.
I think it’s MORE effective than having great slabs of reflective text. IMHO 🙂

Beautiful Job David – the contrast is good and it looks easy to read. Question- anyone could chime in- , what would you charge, in round numbers, for a job like this were you doing it for someone else?
Best,

Best,
SteveThanks for the compliments. Best guess on standard selling price would be about £350+VAT (£400ish) for what’s there, and about another £100/150 for the digital print (and artwork time) for the rear (when it goes on). This is because of the expensive materials (class 2 reflective & 751 series) and the fact that it took about 12 solid hours to cut, weed, tape & apply. (Not busting my proverbials – but steady). The triple layering for the main text eats a LOT of time (getting the halos & offset shadows even) & hidden materials. Was applied 50% dry / 50% wet indoors.

I agree David I thought it was that I don’t like lot’s of reflective for no good reason police etc.

It’s a bargain at that price David considering what a customer would get in visibility alone. Fleets factor it differently, I know, but that’s a good bit of work even if it is working with familiar cuts and vehicles. Great job.

I agree, but given the local market I’ve got to be on a par with the others round here. The thing is – I can get MORE for fleet work than a private individual as they appreciate the ‘national’ average cost. If I were in a major population centre with higher average wages I could get more than that.
I always prefer to give MORE ‘bang for your buck’ than my direct competition. I NEVER drop the prices, just give a bit more attention to detail / cut a bit extra from the materials that would’ve made it to the bin. It’s this attention to detail that has large car/van retailers sending demonstrators and customers & their vans my way!Dave

ROFLMAO! Yeh, I think the ‘boss man’ gets about 2 phone calls a year. "your driver has just cut me up/pulled out/gestured" – not bad with about 13 vehicles on the road! Usual response is, "are you driving without a handsfree kit at the moment sir?, You are!" …….. "Click, doooooooooooo".
And yes, the colour is supposed to be blue but it has the tiniest hint of purple to it in a certain light. Was going to get a respray to the usual company colours, but thought "it’s blue….we can still do the ‘call the man’ thing." In the end I now prefer the darker shade instead of the ‘olympic’ which gives less contrast. I’m pretty chuft with it anyway.ps. it goes like stink!! 2.5 tdci – 6spd box mmmm. One of the lads got a speeding ticket just a week after we got it. 73* on A90 (only allowed 60 in the van) numptie – that’s him on 10 points now.
*which means it was indicating about 80 on the speedo. -

I THOUGHT about doing that, but honestly couldn’t be bothered. It’ll be one of the young lads that’ll have to do it anyway, I’ll be, em "too busy" 😮
It’ll be on ’til the van is sold (with them on) or scrapped. So I’ve no plans to remove them at any point soon. 🙄

dave sorry off topic but trying to buy a 2.5 sportive but nobody will give fuel figgers what do you get.

If doing ‘average/combined’ I’ll get just under 400 to the tank…and it takes £75 to fill from empty. Thirsty begger, but almost like a big car to drive – it doesn’t feel that much slower than my 2.5 V6 Car, just has a slight case of turbo lag on take off and like most diesels a short rev range.

oh dear that sounds a bit high compared to other reports have you scotts lead socks on. a bit for the roof rack and how much stuff usually in the back
chris

Dave, the driver who has 10 points should be got rid off, he is obviously a plank, he either disregards the speed limit, or isnt alert enough to see the cameras.
As for hows my driving? I used to say the following in answer to complaints. " yes sir, that driver has now had 2 complaints in 3 years, its a real shame, he is actually a nice chap, his mum died last week, about a month ago his wife ran off with a younger man, he also discovered last year he has prostate cancer, so on top of all that, he will now loose his job…."
They normally retract their, (usually) petty complaint.
I would still take it up with the driver though, and get his version.Peter

Roof rack went on last week, and it’s usually nearly empty. It’s great on the motorway though as you just pop it into 6th. It’s the round town revving that cripples it (about 3/4 of it’s life), no lead socks – it’s the way you have to drive this turbo diesel – does NOTHING unless it’s in the power band. And by "under 400miles" – I mean about 380/390. I’ll do in a month 450ish town miles and maybe 150 motorway – about a tank and a half.

HMMM sorry Dave getting a bit off your subject of your van ..but i have to ask .I always thought that the "Hows my Driving "set up went to companies that monitored traffic complaints,,,you know had reg numbers of vehicles on there database .and contacted the companies concerned if there was a complaint .But reading between the lines here it appears I’m wrong and the phone numbers go directly to the companies concerned …unless Ive picked it up wrong dd :lol1: :lol1:

That driver LEFT last week as he was demoted to numptie (instead of being sacked) after crashing a van 3 times. (Vehicle destruction is one of our top reasons for leaving) The speeding ticket arrived AFTER that. He was apparently unaware that it’s only 60mph on dual carriageways for that vehicle. Was caught by a talivan (mobile unit). As for driver complaints – with so many vans on the road – without an exact reg no. there’s no way of telling who it was 🙄 (ahem) , but usually a small word in the offenders ear about company reputation does the trick!

Hmmm…now how did I miss this one?
Either when initially posted or when I was in Dundee, Perth, Aberdeen, Fife, and all over that area in May!
Stands out like a sore thumb…in a good way, of course!

I am going to have to go against the grain on this one… 😕
Just my personal opinion and definitely no disrespect intended, but I think the van is far too busy Dave.
I think if you dropped the city names, the slogans and one of the email addresses it would give the name room to breathe.
I know the parent company is City Blinds, but including it in the fashion it is shown, with email address etc only adds to confusion, are you selling blinds, signs or both?
If I had to I would have used a small “City Blinds” logo with the wording “a division of City Blinds” above it even smaller on the door.I do think the van is distinctive and that’s obviously what you want but for me, there is far too much going on in one colour.

reguarding the speed limit on dual carrageway isnt it 70mph upto 7.5 ton ?
-
just read the highway code n its 70 mph for car derived vans upto 2 tonnes max laden weight. 🙄
-
quote Alan Wharton:reguarding the speed limit on dual carrageway isnt it 70mph upto 7.5 ton ?
Not according to this

-
sorry Alan, you just did the research, lots of drivers dont even know that when they see a deristriction sign it applies to the type of road, its a bit stupid really, the highways department could post the limit for that type of road,
but then they would loose revenue from fines!Peter

No offence taken! This is a VERY old post that got resurrected. What counts is I like the van, my customers like the van, it bring in business & the brand identity is maintained throughout the ‘fleet’.
quote :I think if you dropped the city names, the slogans and one of the email addresses it would give the name room to breathe. If for a client I’d agree, but it’s a ‘theme’ we have going. And from a normal veiwing distance the important stuff leaps out – Who we are & HOW to contact us – the rest is just ‘filler’…but has it’s place.
quote :I know the parent company is City Blinds, but including it in the fashion it is shown, with email address etc only adds to confusion, are you selling blinds, signs or both?
If I had to I would have used a small “City Blinds” logo with the wording “a division of City Blinds” above it even smaller on the door. The reason a fairly large ‘tribute’ is made to the blinds side – being the parent company they occasionally ‘borrow’ my van when fitting large awnings, canopies & the like and it was felt prudent to have a reasonable presence on the van.
quote :I do think the van is distinctive and that’s obviously what you want but for me, there is far too much going on in one colour. When ‘Joe Public’ see it, it’s instantly recognisable as a ‘City Blinds’ company – much like the florists, heating engineers & carpet warehouse vans that make up other divisions / companies. Company colours are blue & yellow – it’s now into the local consciousness that that means City Blinds – and the collective reputation and identity makes the group stronger in the marketplace. (Sounds like a load of old b0770x but it’s true!)
Appreciate your comments though Robert!!

I don’t feel I’m really qualified to comment unfortunately. My van is still only half done for the past 8 months, so I’m loathe to be critical of another sign shop…but… I think it does what it is supposed to do… be part of a corporate ‘look’. If it was a one off, perhaps I’d do it differently, but it is tasteful and bright, not to mention a hard vehicle colour to sign anyway.
Cheers
