which gold vinyl would you recommend for inside window?
Posted by Robert Robson on 18 April 2006 at 11:40Hello everyone,
Hope you all had a nice Easter break.
I’d like some advice please. Local window company want some
gold lettering with black outline in vinyl. It’s to go inside double glazed unit.
What vinyl would you recommend for this type of application?
The letters will be about 3in high. Thanks for now.

Hi,
any gold vinyl will do this job. Whether it be Oracal, Metamark, Mactac whatever. You won’t need a cast vinyl for fitting to a flat glass panel, a intermediate will work fine.

Do they want "gold leaf" type vinyl?
Signgold is probably the leader in that type of media.

Thanks Marcella that’s what I was hoping (tight budget, just starting out).
Hi Marek, it’s just plain vinyl. I gave them a sample a while ago that was done with mactac, said that was just what they wanted.
The sample was just on a single pane of glass though, this is to go inside of a double glazed unit so if anything goes wrong the unit will have to be split to repair it.Can anyone see any problems I might have with this?
Thanks Rob

I would never use intermediate gold vinyl on a window job.
Especially with a black outline.
Remember that black absorbs a lot of heat, and can shrink or expand at will, even if it just a bit.
Your gold will suffer as a result.
I would use SignGold.
They make a kind just for interior window applications.
A 2-yard starter kit is $99, and comes with a cool CD.
If you’re going to do something, do it right.
If you have to re-do this for free once it fails, it about equals the cost of the SignGold.

Thanks Jill for your reply.
You are right of course, do the job properly, less chance of failure.Anyone know where would I get SignGold in UK?
Thanks Rob.

I’ve used gold vinyl on the inside of glass before, never had any problems at all.
I also supply it to a glazing firm who apply it to their own units too. As far as I’m aware they’ve never had any issues either. -
Marcella that’s what I wanted to know. If you have used gold vinyl without any problems then that’ll do for me.
What Jill said makes sense too, but just for now I’ll take the less complicated method. Thanks for your help.

Love….Jilli agree in principle jill,
but…
as you say….
it’s the black that may shrink, whatever god is on top, will move with it surely ? won’t matter if it’s inter, sign gold, or gold leaf, the black moves, so does the gold, and i doubt a thin black outline will absorb much heat anyways,
so…..
whats the advantage of using the sign gold ?
btw, since it’s inside the panel, i would cut it the right way around, and lay it to the rear piece of glass, facing outward,
we are assuming this is going outside even, is it ? if internal, use what you like !

Not speaking about shrinkage, but one big advantage can be see here: http://signgold.com/sign.php. There are many different finishes and styles of signgold. It’s more of a traditional look without actually having to use gold leaf.

I just had to re-do an entire van that I lettered in Avery hi-performance.
All the black failed; thus all the vinyl layered onto it failed as well.
I repeat, if you are going to do something, do it right.
I would only use SignGold.
Just my opinion tho.
I have seen other gold-type films delaminate.
Why risk it?
Certain SignGold is made for glass and specifically says so.
I would only use cast black as well.
I have had a SignGold/black outline job last perfectly for two years outside on a window that gets full sun for the better part of the day.

Jill, was there a problem with that batch of black, do you think? Has this ever happened to you before?
I also wonder about the extremes of heat that you get which we don’t get over here! (The sun was shining today though!)
