    😳

Client has just pulled a job due for installation tomorrow. Their legal dept say they haven’t got planning permission – like a fool, I assumed they had that sorted. Bet you’ve been there & t-shirted on this one.

My question is – does it generally require planning, if it is a replacement sign for a new company logo going in the same position ? Same size (albeit largish – logo comprises 4 x non-illuminated built-up ali lettters @ 1500mm high x 150mm returns, and 5400mm long in total. Oh, and it’s located at high level, about 13metres from ground on a brick elevation in a private industrial estate)

If this is a grey area, anyone know of a decent website that might have an answer ?

    Thanks in advance

Your laws may be different, but I”m not sure planning is required if it is a replacement to a sign. The original sign would have had the permission. Unless they are saying that sign is not approved?

That said, if you are using built up letters, some councils here see that as ‘manufactured’and thus, would require drawing and installation details.

I’d imagine you had best ring your local authority.

    Sorry couldn’t be more help.

I think that the height might be an issue, if you were simply replacing a sign with an identical new sign there might not be a problem but with the logo having changed Im pretty sure that you would need to notify planning. I would definitely giving the planning dept a ring to clarify matters.

I make my clients deal with the zoning officer firsthand and prior to even making the sign.
I know some sign companies charge a fee and pull the permit themselves.
Here, if you put up a sign without the permit (sometimes even for a sign change on an existing structure) you can get a certified letter from the zoning officer and a hefty fee.
Bottom line, they did not do their homework.
A call to the zoning officer by them is in order.
I would not install that sucka without approval.
Do you really want to have to un-install it?

I’ll do the application myself usually. Clients will tell you anything to get the sign up. At least if I do it I know its done, and saves all the tooing and froing with the council with the client asking for things to submit etc. I charge them for it tho.

I used to do all the planning applications for my previous employer, most of the time there is no problem getting planning approval. But planning officers can be really awkward if there is a sign put up without planning permission. I sent off for a booklet from my planning authority to help me decided what does and doesnt need planning permission. Anyone can get one of these booklets just by ringing up the planning dept of your local council

You are best to speak to your local council and they should send you some information and let you know when you or your client should be looking at getting permission from them. The look of the area, age of the building and a load of other things all come into account when you need to put a sign up. We dont really get involved with the planning part … we do provide our clients with dimensions, colour, specs etc for them to show the council, the rest is up to them.

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister have produced a booklet called “Outdoor Advertisements and Signs” which may be the one Jayne mentioned.

It can also be viewed on http://www.planning.odpm.gov.uk/advice.htm

Class 5 deals with business premises and as Jayne also mentioned Height is a factor

Replacement signs in our area don’t need planning permission if they are of the same size and construction.

We fitted new signs to a building that was made of courragated asbestos and the company knew that they would not get planning permission so asked my advice.

We taped off the area where we were fitting the sign and jetwashed the outer area so it was nice and clean so when the planning rolled up, we said we were replacing a sign we had already removed. I still don’t believe we got away with it. 😀
