Posted by MarkB on 16 March 2006 at 10:24Morning,
Has anyone any advice on how to space the posts away
from a wall your fixing into?,(customer didn’t want them to be fixed
in the ground!).There’s an 1″ overlapping fixture on the top of the wall that I need

I would use either a baton down the length of the post in contact with the wall, or use steel angle brackets
I would also be carefull fixing to a wall especially if its only a single course.
if the sign area is to large it could bring the wall down in high winds.Peter

Presumably if you’re not going into the ground then the posts must be fixed to the wall. Therefore I would use some aluminium box section as spacers.
Also, walls are strong in compression, but not in tension or shear, so have a good look at condition of the wall, the size of the sign and consider the leverage involved as to whether you think it will pull the wall over in a strong wind.
Get something signed by the client to protect yourself.

Would it be possible to run a “stay” off each post set into the ground behind the sign? Not fixing into the wall altogether.
Just an idea?

i did one of these last year, welded up some steel brackets exact size i wanted and welded them to the posts. then fixed the posts to the wall with rawl bolts. the base was into the ground only 6 inches as that’s as far down as i could go. but back filled that to stop any movement. the one i did was pretty big though….
if fixing to the wall like that ide make up some steel base plates welded to the foot of the posts. this will help with movement exaggerated by wind movement caused by the wind.
