Blank slate signs supplier?
Posted by Russell Pavey on 15 February 2006 at 15:14Hi All
Please can anybody point me in the direction of a supplier (other than Mastergrave) that can supply various sizes and shapes of honed finish slate.
Have Googled it but only signmakers come up and not the suppliers of.
Many thanks in advance

we would be very interested in finding out about this too.
recent tests with engraver on laminates were very successful but would like to try slate.
Any tips we should be aware of when engraving slate??
Many thanks

Russell,
I did some slate trophies for a client a few years ago and bought in some chunks of slate from a firm round the corner from me. I can’t remember their name for the moment I’ll have a look on my way in to work tomorrow. From memory they’ll cut and polish a piece almost any size from sheets about 1800 x 1000 and I think about 25mm thick. More details tomorrow morning

I have sent you Personal Message on this subject.
The standard thicknesses of slate is either 20mm or 30mm , maximum sizes approx 2000×1300.
There are lots of alternatives.

Paul,
Further to my reply yesterday, The company are called Style Charm Fireplaces, they make them, telephone 01268 288587. They were very helpful when I bought from them. I sandblasted a logo and some text, I imagine it’s possible to screen print onto the surface but I don’t think vinyl will adhere very well. -
have a look in the yellow pages etc for marble suppliers (stone masons),
i used to do a bit of hand engraving (poorly !) and all of my slate and marble was from a local place that made kitchen tops, headstone blanks, etc etc etc, they would cut and polish anything really, though all my stuff came from the scrap pile ! amazing what could be found in there !!

Thanks Hugh – I’ll do that.
