can someone help with solar vinyl removal please?
We have a client whose restaurant which is being re-furbished. I’ve just been to spec the job and about 24 windows have solar vinyl – the one way reflective sort – on the inside and we have to remove it. Any advice would be most welcome. I’d normally use heat and a paint stripper type blade tool then clean with white spirit and again with meths. Anything quicker apart from re-glazing??! We then have to frost and vinyl the windows. Thanks.

I removed some of that once. The film came off easy enough but the adhesive remained and was completely dry and powdery. I used a 6″ wide window scraper and a lot of white spirit and meths.

Be carefull using heat gun on shop front glass / windows. If its laminated and you use too much heat you will crack the glass from the edge if it is not a perfect cut on the glass or you can damage the interlayer in the glass.
Your best shot is start to remove the film and hope that it is good quality which normally strips easier, most of the adhesive will come away with the film, any glue left on the glass can be removed as stated in previous reply, with a 6 inch razor scraper but you must make sue you use a new blade to ensure you dont scratch the glass.
If its really bad, use rapid remover or a good quality adhesive remover to soften th adhesive first.

I’ve removed tint from windows before by steaming it off. spray the the vinyl with water, then cut open a black garbage bag & spread it on the glass(vinyl side). let it sit for a while occasionally peeling back a corner of the bag & spraying some water. it’s best if done on a warm sunny day. let it set for about 45 minutes to an hour. it should peel right off, glue & all. at least window tint does.

Straight edge razor blades in a holder?
Not the funnest job ever.
A hair dryer might be of help too as I find a heat gun to be too hot.
Then clean up with Goo Gone and Windex.

Get yourself a wallpaper steamer and work slowly…..and pray the tint is a good quality one.
Quality tint is metalised and very tough – not at all like vinyl – so it should come off ok as long as you can heat the adhesive to break it’s bond.
I’ve found a wallpaper steamer to be the best and most tinters will tell you the same thing.
