  • can i light up flat-cut stand offs?

Posted by Lorraine Clinch on 7 February 2006 at 13:35

I have ordered a new sign to be routed with my bus. name, and I plan to use the cut-outs as stand-offs, use vinyl where appropriate, but I would like to use light behind the stand-offs. I have not made any lit signs before, and I’m not sure if I should use LEDS, or what?

    Any suggestions gratefully received,

    Cheers, Lorraine

    Hi Lorraine,

Sorry this is not an answer to your question but I just wanted to point out one possible drawback with using the routed letters as stand-offs, incase you hadn’t realised.

The letters that you will get as a result of routing the panel will not look 100% because of the route path needed to make the hollowed out letters look right

I know I’m not explaining this very well but the upshot will be the letters will probably have rounded corners & the points in capital N’s & W’s for example will be rounded too making the letters look a little odd

Depending on the size of the router bit they use, the finished letter might not look too bad but I just thought I’d point it out to you anyway

Hi Glenn, thanks for the warning! Hadn’t thought of that but will take it up with suppliers.
