looking to buy a CNC router which one should i go for?
Hi all
Now I know this is a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" type question but here goes.
A friend has contacted me and told me he is in the market for a xyz CNC router with an 8′ x 4′ area and he has asked my advice as to which one to go for.
Now I know the square root of zero about routers but I said I would ask here for any suggestions.
I know there are many makes and models available and recomending one is impossable but there maybe ones he should stay away from or things he should look out for when searching for one of these machines.

lol Paul… i guess you soon get bored of this assignment.. it does my head in. We been talking about them recently but this is the thread that I am on. We are exactly the same boat, 8×4 is needed so we got to make a transition from our smaller router (in buy & sell)

Looks like there are quite a few of us looking for a router…
If we buy the same one maybe we could get a volume discount! 😀So far here is were my reserach is:
AXYZ – liked the machine (5×8) but it’s rack & pinion
TekCel – I would seriously consider this one if I was in the UK – Rodney swears by it and it’s all ballscrews.
Multicam: Nice but rack & pinion and a little too heavy duty for my application.
Shop Sabre: Nice price, ballscrews, my leader so far but in Canada
Zund: Pricey but it can do a lot of other things like cut vinyl, score boxes, etc.Take your pick!

I already posted under the other post that was mentioned.
Think about the jobs you are going to be doing, and table size etc, compared to what your sheet sizes are from your supplier.
Lots of plastics come in 3m x 2m or 1500mm x ?
The axyz machine is 1500mm by whatever you order.
Gerber have been sending out special deals recently here on a Sabre 408 for 249,000kr exchange rate is about 14kr to the £ thats for servo motored router, but with a smaller table (8×4 or abit bigger, 1300mm ?)
Thats a nice router.
I hope now they’ve saturated the market with plotters and printers that that side is now not about to be destroyed too 🙂

Just in case there are any misunderstandings, I’d just like to let you guys know that Tekcel routers are available in the UK.
Earlier models were branded by Spandex as ‘Tornados’ but almost two years ago, my business partner and I left Spandex, each after 10 years, and went into partnership with the manufacturer to sell and support these CNC routers. Why? Well, we thought these routers were best in class and the manufacturer felt that Spandex no longer had the focus it once had.
Following our departure, Spandex lost the rights to re-brand and sell the Tekcel router range. Let’s just say that there were some at Spandex who were none to pleased and tried to ‘reward’ us accordingly.
However, thanks to the support of the sign industry in the UK and Ireland, we’ve been able to successfully launch our new E and V Series routers and we’re really enjoying our jobs again. Installations are already up on the very best years at Spandex; we’re involved in more industries than ever before; we’re looking after customers better than ever before. We have a great team of CNC engineers on board – capable of providing technical support for both earlier Gerber systems and later Tekcel routers.
