  • What’s a .hqx file?

Posted by Jayne Marsh on 19 January 2006 at 13:59

Can anyone tell me what a .hqx file is? Ive been sent artwork saved as an .eps.hqx and I cant open it, the computer wont even see it as a file. I need to be able to import this in to either Flexi, Corel or Illustrator. Any help appreciated 😀

This is a long shot but copy the original file and rename it to .eps if that doesnt work i think that the program stuffit, see if theres a trial version to open your file.

there is a demo version of stuffit:

Best bet would be to contact the sender of the mail and request the filetype you need.

Another way: ask John Childs as he uses MACS and may be able to help out….

If you struggle Jayne, email it over.

I’ll open it and save as Illustrator.

I was going to suggest that you send it anyway Jayne because I am out all day tomorrow and wouldn’t be able to help you then.

    Sorry Jayne. Miserable failure.

When I try to unstuff the files all I get is an error message…..

The file “tenants.ai.hqx” does not appear to be compressed or encoded. It is advised that you obtain further information about the contents of this file from the sender or provider of the file.

The eps version behaves in the same manner.

I have even downloaded the latest version of Stuffit to see if that would help but it made no difference.

I don’t know what else to suggest now, other than to see if your client can send you an unStuffed file, but I’ll keep playing and if I have any success I’ll get back toy you.

Thanks John, I really appreciate your efforts, I have now managed to obtain the design agency’s tel no ( like getting blood out of a stone ) 😮
So will ring them direct in the morning.
    Thanks again

    Hello,

Binhex is an encoding method commonly used on Macs. To remove Binhex encoding, you will need StuffIt. Right click on the file with the HQX suffix, and from the StuffIt menu, choose remove Binhex encoding. This should leave a regular StuffIt archive, which can be opened by the usual means. It may be worth asking your designers to make sure that any attachments are “PC friendly” so that they aren’t encoded with Binhex in the first place. Apple Mail has a check box for this when you add an attachment. I can open it for you if you want to email it to me. Not sure if I’m allowed to put my email address, as I only joined last night, and I’m a real noob.

    Hope this helps,
    Jamie.

Don’t think you can put mail addresses here, they always get editted out, not sure how you are supposed to contact someone perhaps one of the moderators can tell us why and how to contact each other without paying a fee for a higher membership.

I think I may have solved the problem but wont be sure till I get back in later this morning. It seems that the files were being sent via a government department and were getting this hqx added on en route, dont know why? I have just had the file sent straight from the designers themselves and it has come in no problem just as a straight ai file. Strange one that!
Again thanks for all your help on this one and Ive managed to learn something more about files at the same time. 😀

That’s strange because one of the thing I tried was to strip off the .hqx and open it straight into Illustrator bacause Stuffit told me it might not be a compressed file.

Anyway, as long as you got the job out on time. 😀

John, Im still having problems as Im still short of one of the files so Im having to redo it from a dodgy Jpg, so it looks like Im working at the weekend 😕
My hubby seems to think that if the file goes through a Unix server then it can be encrypted somehow……….he lost me after he said Unix 😮
Anyway he said hed read something about it on the net. It seems the designer didnt do anything to the file himself and it got the suffix added as it was sent
