  • What tape do you use to tack up vinyl?

Posted by Mark Pack on 13 January 2006 at 19:52

    Hi all.

I was wondering what kind of tape you all use to tack your vinyl up to glass when your measuring and making sure your signs are straight.

I’ve tried masking tape, and even found the strongest tack I could and I’ve used a strong tack app tape. But even when I degrease the windows it still doesn’t seem to hold in place.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers Mark

I use 3m masking tape (50mm) I have used others but have had problems, it worth paying a bit extra for 3m, I get mine by the box from local motor factors, works out at about £1.20 a roll

I use the green painters tape.
I’ve never had a problem with it holding. It also doesn’t pull off paint.

    Mark,
The blue isn’t as strong as the green. The blue is really good for painting.

    Andrew,
If you can’t duct it, f*@k it. That’s the saying we use out here.

Mark, the reason you are having trouble with masking tape on windows is simple, you are holding the tape with your warm fingers too close to the cold glass causing condensation, this is the main cause of the tape not sticking to the glass.

You must keep your fingers away from the glass in the area where you are going to stick down the tack while you are lining up the vinyl, when straight then press down the tack (masking tape)

sorry this is hard to explain in type, but try holding the vinyl a few inches away from the tack until ready to press down the tape to the glass.

PS even in summer you will find the glass is cold , unless the sun is shinning straight onto it.
