Trade Suppliers
Posted by Dave Rossetter on 11 January 2006 at 16:44As most of the people on uksignboards are in fact Signmakers I have to ask what is it that makes you use one trade supplier over another. As an employee of a trade organisation it would be so useful to know what you would expect from your supplier, ie quality of goods, quick delivery that sort of thing.

at the moment we would probably say the company that was most helpful when we ring for a quote or some advice on their product. We have been putting together a quote for one customer this week, but when she saw the emailed response we got from one well known supplier she asked if we could look for a different supplier as she didnt want to deal with them, too rude! we were more than happy to keep looking for another supplier, as we too felt like they didnt want the business. since found several suppliers who were a lot more approachable and worthy of giving our business to!

There is no need for anybody to be rude wether they be customer or supplier. I should imagine that will be the last time your company ask them for a quote.

We deal with mainly one supplier for most of our day to day vinyl needs
One thing we find very helpful is the fact that we talk to the same guy for every order.
Over the couple of years that we have been with them he has become familier with the equipment we use and the products we order on a regular basis so if a new product comes out he knows whether we would be interested and can contact us etc
They also ask our advice on certain issues, ask us to test certain products which makes us feel part of a team instead of just a customer.
Hope this helps

The one thing that will put me off a supplier is failing to meet promised deliveries. It amazes me how many will fail to meet agreed delivery times and don’t even bother to inform you of a delay.

sad to say that we only deal with a handful of suppliers, although we put a lot of enthasis on how well a supplier keeps ‘printed/website/email’ material flowing. Those who advertise their latest range of products normally end up getting the phone calls as normally there delivery costs are nil and they do deliver next day.

For me, my supplier who gets most of my business, gets it becasue they makes it easy on me.
I talk to the same person when ordering for the most part, but not crucial. As has been said.. they know me, my equpment and my tastes.(usually ..”hey it’s steve i need this.. you got it.. see ya”)Sales is knowledgeable about the product, and gives accurate advice.
Sends me emails on new products.
On time delivery.. even if it’s back ordered and they say two weeks.. that’s when i get it.
Price is usually close with the suppliers i use, so it’s not a big issue, but this summer i switched to a different supplier for most of my vinyl soley over price. They both gave me great service, but it was about 1-2 hundred dollar a month savings for me, without sacrificing quality.
