  • can anyone give advise & opinions on summa D120 SE?

Posted by Silvio Alves on 16 December 2005 at 09:44

    Hi Everyone,

I would appreciate some quick advise, are there any users out there who own a Summa D120 SE.

We are considering purchasing this machine in favor of Secabo (have had nothing but problems with Secabo lately).

The spec on the Summa Summa D120 SE:-

Drag knife vinyl cutter with servo drives, speed up to 1130mm/sec, pressure up to 400g, max. cutting width 1200mm, max. cutting length no limit, max. media width 1220mm. Scope of delivery: cutterholder, 1 drag knife, cables, software WinPlot for Windows and MacSign for Mac, serial and USB port, OPOS crop mark detection.

Ideally we would prefer going down the Graphtec range of cutters, however our supplier does not do these machines, we are stuck with this machine, as we are in negotiations with the supplier for trading in the useless Secabo C120II cutter.

anyway would appreciate your views and advise on the above machine, before we make the plunge.

    Thanks in advance

    Silvio

I have a D60 Summa for 3 years now and not had a problem with it, I would definitely buy another one.

Thanks Nick & Hugh for your input. I have just received an email from my supplier who has agreed to trade in my Secabo Cutter.

He has agreed to take the secabo cutter and charge me £ 1,600.00 for the Suma D120SE

He has also suggested that I consider the “Emblem EC120” which apparently is identical to the Suma but comes with SignLab Shortcut instead of Wincut that comes with the Summa Cutter.

The Emblem EC120 is £ 300.00 cheaper than the Suma.

I am now stuck on which way to go, as I have checked out the specification and see that they are identical, they both have OPUS 2.0.

I currently use ArtCUT 2005, my Supplier has suggested that I export my work in EPS to enable me to import it into Wincut (If I go down Summa Route), Just tried a test export, and tried opening up ArtCUT exported EPS in CorelDraw 12….didn’t work!!!, any suggestions?

    Appreciate your opinions on this?

    regards

    Silvio

Save it in an earlier version of Corel at lot of the programmes support earlier version of Corel and Illustrator etc etc.
Try 7, 8 or whatever that might do the trick.

wincut or winplot ? mine uses winplot Ver 6, nice easy program, i think i’d go with the summa, purely cos its a name i know, unless the other is a rebranded summa ?

i seriously think my next step will be a D120 when funds allow (unless a nice print/cut machine comes along for nothing !!!), i’m already getting a number of jobs that i have to sub out due to the size, i know i can panel the design in winplot, but when sending out signage for customers to self apply, some of them get a little funny that it comes in two bits !

    Hi Hugh
Thanks for the advise, I have decided to go down the Summa Route rather than the Emblem, as it seems to be a re badged version of Summa.

I think Summa are a reputable company and by the posts I have seen they also seem popular with members.

Ordered our Summa yesterday and now have to wait for it to come down.

The Summa will come down with WinCut.

    Hi Forbie,
I have tried exporting my old files from ArtCUT into Corel 10 and 12 without luck…..:headbang2:

My Supplier advised me to try DXF, This works to a certain degree. Have to learn to use WinCut and Corel.

    Regards

Silvio, make sure you’re importing with the “PS interpreted” filter, not .eps.
This usually works when you have trouble with .eps.

    Hi there.

I use both the summa D60 & the summa D120 everyday. Both are brilliant machines & have never had a single problem with either of them. (touch wood) Due to my own experience with them I wouldn’t buy any other brand of cutter.
