hi Derek,
99% of the time its some file you have in your system that could be corrupted, try to run your computer from the Norton CD and check your hard drive. its is most common whats happening with your computer nothing new just make sure your anti virus is up to date and the virus definition as well. then all should be could to run.

derek 🙁Have you just reloaded new software recently? Could be a corruption as Nancy says.
If it is winxp, load in safe mode, and then go to your last restore point and reload that. It has happened to me recently, and that is all I did.
Mine was caused by adaware software that was trying to take over my broadband, and hung the machine until the modem kicked it.
Ran spyware doctor and it deleted it and all was sweet.
Hope that helps
Cheers

Hi Derek, what operating system are you running?
If you have XP and you have a Microsoft XP CD put that in then boot the PC and you will find help on that, you may have to set the bios to boot from the CD but it is probably set that way already.
Be careful what you do cos if you reinstall Windows you will lose all you data and programs.

sounds to me like an XP thing happening We experienced similar at work with our XP O. S.But maybe Derek can Clarify

back on line 😀
thanks for the help managed to start in safe mode and went back to last week for restore point
still not convinced everything is OK
have pc-cillin security running and have ran spy bot and ad aware
and nothing has cropped up system seems to take ages to load up
i am running xp pro all my updates are OK
was up till 3 this morning doing my head in and then the missus told me she tried to download a programme called skype free calls to other skype
users so managed to find all files and delete wonder if this was the start of the problem
the problem was intermittent ie it would either freeze as soon as desktop opened up or would seem OK but the mouse pointer seemed to be sticking
and then at no particular time would freeze again
as i say it seems ok now (<(

🙁 here we go again tried to do some work yesterday on the desktop printing a load of mugs and pc started to freeze again had been running ok for a couple of days although never done much work just switched on and checked e mail etc had to re boot a couple of times and managed to get going again then froze again switched off
switched on again this morning and no problem!everything seems ok
at the moment backing all my documents and e mails (how do i save my favourite web sites rather than write them all down)?
think i may have to do a full install
dont want to go all the way through it and find out hard drive is faulty or something do you think its time for an upgrade
any good deals at pc world etc that anybody knows about
i have had towers built for me but too many problems to go down that route
would rather have a new tower and just have this one sitting until i have all the info off it
any ideas
this at the moment runs the mutoh 650 the pc 600 three printers and also
card readers storage devices and a dvd r/wr all on usb derek -

derek, missed your posts but heres my 2cents lol
1: Your freeze, does the mouse freeze as well?
2: Most laptop (like Dell) have a fan to cool down the processor, this fan kicks in when the computer is doing a lot, mine has three positions, Off/On/Friggin Fast. Was the fan making a lot of noise in a friggin fast state?
3: As you said it is intermittent but only on boot up… there is a program you can run to ‘turn off’ bits on startup… Press Start, Press Run and type ‘msconfig’, this helps diagnose the issue.
4: A post says that you having jumping mouse and sticking while loaded… this could be a problem with the computer talking to one of its hardware…. have you got a bad CD/Floppy/Memory stick in the drive? Unplug all uneeded hardware etc… Are you getting a new ticking noise from the harddrive ?
5: You did say you installed Skype (without Hardware?), Skype maybe making the processor flat out and you must never delete files manually… always add/remove programs or uninstaller.I suspect your computer guy will fix it.
Cheers

hi dave yes the mouse freezes as well also get the little eggtimer showing
after its up and running it will then freeze and then will freeze as it is booting up normally as desktop icons are loading
i removed skype with uninstaller but done a search as it would start to load as my home page and removed all skype files 😳
i have the odd ticking from the hard drive (how hot should the hard drive get )
i have removed the cover and checked all connections and plugged in extra fans
and it seems to be running ok so i will let it run ansd see what happens

Derek, the drive will got hot yes, but too much heat will fry them… but in the case of the laptop that would only happen after 10hr or so on.
Mouse freeze with hourglass, that sounds normal but maybe linked with mouse/trouchpad/nipple driver loading…..
If you get the odd slow ‘tick tick tick’ from the harddrive AND frozen mouse at the same time and then recovers and few minutes later does the same thing and this repeats in a pattern then you have impending hard-drive failure… backup everything immedietly.Another sign is if you have a SMART warning when you start the computer.
Heat will effect the drive but not on a short run, the processor will get hot but if that overheats then you should get random non-sense, not the same pattern over and over again.
removing parts of a file is silly thing to do, msconfig will help you sort that by turning off the remaining services. Run your computer in safe mode and see if things work fine, albeit cant do much but if the computer runs fine in safe mode then it is startup program etc.

hi again its now dead decided to re install from new windows xp full install but it now freezes on start up wont even go in safe mode
what would be the minimum i should be looking for with a new unit
as i am off to pc world !

Sorry mate… You need to clarify with engineer 1st
Sounds like a harddrive replacement… 2.5inch, they just don’t like being knocked about or frozen in vans etc. got to look after the damn things. Harddrives are about £50 notes + time.
HP or Dell are top makes, PC world I am afraid sell family PC’s in my view and not really built that well. For your cutting requirements, I would consider a fixed system, although will out-perform a laptop processor anyday.
See local computer store..

hi dave just got my new hard drive
MAXTOR ATA133 80GB 2MB CACHE £37.73
i took the old one in and asked for a replacement
plugged it all in and inserted my xp pro disc after some initial activity it
has blue screen with windows set up top left and at the bottom set up is starting windows
any idea what happens next :ball:

you will get asked a series of questions about preparing the harddrive and setting up windows…
If asked format to NTFS, say yes.
If asked for the CD Key, look under the laptop/computer for the number, its on a sticker attached somewhere.
Thats itThat was a cheap price, doesn’t sound like a laptop drive though.
-
sorry dave its my desktop not the lap top i get all my pc stuff from the same place http://www.ash-distribution.co.uk
always pretty reasonable
as before it goes through the motions then stops at set up is starting windows -
um. could be many things derek. but most of the time it starts. difficult to diagnose a problem over the internet.
however if you gone past the bit that prepares the Harddrive, it then copies a load of files to the drive…
it then asks for a reboot.
it then boots up and continues setup in a more friendlier setup screen…
it then copies a huge amount of data across, at some point it may ask about altering your monitor preference.
it also asks about timezones etc.
it may ask for administrator passwords
at some point it asks for CD Key
Windows BootsNot much really fails during that procedure…
if it does fail, it could be the harddrive….
… it could be a USB mouse/keyboard battery…
… something else dead inside the computer. -
thanks dave doesnt seem to get to the reboot section you refer to
i will ring the supplier and let you know what the problem is
