Hi Nik,
If you are trying to duplicate something on top or in the back of the original you can Copy (ctrl + c) and either Paste in Front (ctrl + F) or Paste In back (Ctrl + B).
Also Control + D will duplicate the last command. So if move an object and hit ctrl + D it will move it again. You can Alt Drag on an object and it will Dupe it as well. Then Ctrl D will Dupe and move again.
Hope that helps. Let me know if that makes sense.

The important thing about ALT+drag is that you must let go of the mouse button before letting go of the ALT key. You should see the mouse pointer change to a double arrow while you have the ALT pressed.
You can use the ALT key to do step and repeat arrays as well:
Say you want to step and repeat an object on 100mm centres, press CTRL+K (or click Edit>Preferences>General) and type 100mm in the Keyboard Increment box, click OK.
Select the object you want to move, press and hold ALT, and tap one of the arrow keys in the direction you want your copy. Keep going til you have the array you need.
The keyboard increment is really useful for nudging things about if you set it small enough too. IF you press and hold SHIFT while you move it will temporarily multiply the increment by ten.
Have fun!

Good point Richard,
Another option is to use the move dialog box. Just select your object then Ctl+Shift+M then enter the amount and direction to move and Click the Copy Button as many times as needed.

Here is another one click on the object you want to duplicate.
The press CTRL and ALT together the move your object top bottom left right drop the object then let go with the ctrl and alt after you drop the copy you can use Shift as well to keep it level aligned etc .
