    hi all,

just been looking at some photos of a livery on a plane in sign link magazine, it says ‘…even aeroplanes are being wrapped in vinyl’
what i was thinking is can you trim round the windows etc with a scalp like you would on a van or is that a no, no, on a plane because you may cut into the aluminum skin of the plane, i know you would not cut into it but you may mark it enough to start a metal fatigue crack from, or may be not, would not like to take the risk.

i don’t have a plane to do, its just something a have thought of from time time, if you can not cut it on the plane it must be a pig of a job to line it all up.

any one on the boards do planes?

Either the vinyl is flat bed cut to the exact shape or you would cut the vinyl on a template (such as polycarb) covering the window surround and then apply. Very often the edges will need to be edge sealed.

No you do cut on the plane, obviously with extreme caution, and if there is any sign of damage you get a big bill, was about £5000 for a set of windows on a 737 I was told.

Check some back posts in members portfolio, we have a couple of members that do planes. theres a real nice 747 in there done for the olympics. im sure you have to use a real good 3m cast, specific type i think? could be wrong though… have a search its in there some place.

oh i think its featured in signextra in one of the inspiration point posts.

we did work on a Lear Jet and had to use a specific 3M vinyl to allow for the massive expansion and contraction……. I think a lot of them are set up in the hanger, masked and painted.. although ones like the NZL plane probably use the same 3M material specified to us (?) (?) (?)
