  Printer For Outdoor Signage

  Hi,

  I am considering buying a printer for the following applications, I have read a lot about Cadets and PC600’s but would like opinions of others after reviewing my wants and needs:

  Current Equipment:
  Summacut (610)
  EasySign

  What I am Aiming at Doing:
  Printing saftey signs, logos and emblems on PVC, vinyl, estate agent type boards, aluminium (If Possible) and possibly banners.

  Size of print area on average will be around 12 – 15″ wide and lengths will vary

  The printed material will be displayed outdoors primarily

  The printer may have long periods of non-use and will not need to be a heavy duty version i.e running 8 hours a day.

  when you say long periods of non use, how long are you talking mate. day, 2 days, week month? if its a week at a time or more and often, then a versacamm maybe a better choice, i would think. same machine, just runs different inks.

  that said, you maybe able to ask for a cadet with the less agressive inks in it. maybe n option. just remember, when you have a cadet, you change ink to less greessive eco-inks at no cost, but if you have versacamm and decide you need solvent inks, then it will cost you about a grand to upgrade

  Can you breifly explain the differences between solvent and eco types of ink and why its important to get the right one?

  i would say go for an eco-solvent machine then mate.

  A solvent machine would require a lot of use, the ink is air drying therefore could leak into the heads. A solvent machine has to be left on 24hrs (standby) where it keeps the head clean. (Most expensive to run)

  EcoSolvent is a weaker ink but has greater gamut range in some machines that may have 4-10 print heads. It is less UV outdoor stable but may require lamination. (Cheaper)

  However there is other type of machine based on the same technology as the Cadet/Versacamm/JV3 and that is the Epson 10000/10600, these printers come in 3 packages of different ink but I would talk to a dealer about them to find out their weaknesses, they are claiming outdoor durability these days which I cannot say if it is true or not. (Cheap-cheap)

  Gerber Edge and others, great for safety signs as it is foil based, expense can be running it.
