can i apply reflective on to wheelcovers?
Posted by Lorraine Clinch on 7 October 2005 at 13:51A good customer has just phoned to request reflective vinyl lettering on his solid plastic wheelcover.
I have doubts as to whether reflective will stick very well. Does anyone have any experience of this?
All my reflective was purchased from Victory, I think a class 2, but can’t remember for sure (not marked on back)
Any feedback appreciated.

Lorraine,
If the are rigid plastic you shouldn,t have a problem reflective is normally stickier that standard vinyl, just clean well first.Kev

Ditto. Also apply dry, and make sure the customer knows it aint coming off again without damaging the cover. If this is a concern, you could apply a black (or whatever colour) circle in normal vinyl first.

Thanks for the replies guys. Andy, I had thought of using black under, trouble is its a moulded Land Rover cover, lots of grooves etc, so not a flat sheet. Think I’ll just go for it, if you think it’ll be OK.

Lorraine, although you wont have any problems if the cover is clean why don’t you talk them into a new cover. I normally sugest to customers that they may be better off with a new cover and keep the original for when they sell the car. Covers dont cost much so most people are quite happy to do this. That way you know you will be working on a flat surface.

Nice one Martin, I’ll remember that. I’m paying around £20 +vat, is this about right, and how much do you sell them out at? (excluding the graphics, just the cover)

i thought reflective was a no-no on the back of a vehicle.
The only thing reflective should be the indicator panelsnot sure though

Can’t see why it should be a problem-after all, it is going to make the vehicle more visible in the dark, so extra safety factor?

Yes Dave as stated in the APS cataloger
The Road Vehicles Lighting Reg. 1989
Red must be used to the rear
Any Co lour can be used on the side
Any co lour other than Red can be used on the front.Food for thought on a Friday……. 😛

Dave I think there is some legislation about this but not sure quite what which is why I didn’t mention it before, it deffinatly doesnt say just reflector panels because there is an EU directive out about conspicuousy marking with red reflactive tape on vehicles over a certain weight. I know you are not supose to use white as you are not allowed to show a white light to the rear but not sure on other colours.
There are a number of vehicles running around up here with reflective on the back and to my knowledge they have not been pulled over for it. -
I just went looking for the posts… found one

Could be considered as head lights of a motor bike in thick fog? I don’t write the rules, but just stick to standard yellow/white. If not, talk to the local police and see what they say.

So as long as I use ONLY red reflective on back, I’m OK? (& can use any colour non-reflective on back) Not being dim, just clarifying!

As long as it is not a light source, cant find the other post.

if the cover is very flexible like the soft ones you get, use banner vinyl.
if its ridged, use a decent calendar/cast. if you want reflective, apply ontop of base layer if you have a shadow or outline, like has been suggested in other threads. its a good way even if removing it later as its the normal vinyl you remove, not reflective as its ontop.
as martin has said though, if there is moulding its false economy to apply ontop, get a new one, wheel cover that is, not customer 😉
there are a few wheel cover manufacturers that do good ones. not pushing our sites advertiser here (as i have never used their covers or know prices) but i do know they sell them too. “blank covers from grafityp”i think there is a very good one with name like mr wheelcover or something, do very good ones from memory, rigid and soft. maybe google that one? -
rigid smooth wheel covers
-that lock around like a barrel lid -
Barney-do you know a supplier of these type of covers please?
