  • why cant my pc detect a mouse when switched on?

Posted by Phill Fenton on 5 October 2005 at 08:28

I use an older PC running windows 98 for word processing and running my acounts software. This morning when I switched on, windows failed to detect a mouse. I’ve tried connecting a different mouse and re-booted a number of times (including in safe mode) however each time I still get the message to say windows does not detect a mouse connected.

    I’m stuck πŸ˜•

    Any suggestions?

Phil this happened to me on one of my PCs, it was the PS2 connector on the motherboard that failed so the only thing I could do was use a serial mouse. Computer is still working fine using the serial mouse.

Did you swap mouse port for port? ps2 for ps2 (round connector)?

Mice are auto configuration, not a lot changes. Normally dead mouse or electrical solder failure of the socket. Yes there could be a IRQ conflict but you have to say that you altered something else the day before (like plugged in a scanner)

A serial mouse as Martin said would auto configure, but you cannot buy them in the shops today.

    Thanks Fellas.

It’s working again now – I don’t actually know why. I opened the case, blew out a lot of dust and put it all back together again and for some reason it was working again. I hadn’t done anything at all yesterday and it was working fine until I switched it on again this morning.

A bit strange really – but I was worried this morning when I couldn’t get the thing to work πŸ˜•

Sorry to resurrect this but it’s happened again this morning.

This time it fixed itself again after re-booting only once.

As it’s an intermittent fault I’m assuming it’s not software but is a problem with one of the connections. I’m okay now for today, but I bet the same thing happens again tommorow πŸ˜₯

Assuming you have more than one machine, i`d swap mice around machines and see if the same symptoms occur.

Easiest way to single out if the problem is with the Mouse or the machine.

What in gods name are you doing running Windows 98 anyway?. It`s almost 2006!.

Windows 98 users deserve all they get πŸ˜‰

It’s worse than that Rod – I’m still using a program called Framework (word processor and spreadsheet) that only runs on DOS and will not run at all on more recent machines. (Ah the good old days. They don’t make software like that any more).

The only satelite to leave the solar system , (voyager ?) was a 16 bit computer with 64K of ram divided between Operating system and programm.

Anyone want to take bets on when a Pentium running XP or a Mac with 5 Gigs of ram will do the same.

TouchΓ©. The thing would turn up on an alien planet, and the first message they would get from us is a blue error screen!
