applying frosted panels with tape dry or wet?
Posted by Jon Fields on 27 September 2005 at 20:55Hi all…
I have job to apply 2 x frosted panels with the lettering and logos cut from it..in terms of applying the vinyl..what would be the best / suggested way. Ive done this before on plain frosted panels..applied wet..quite a long process but worked out ok…how ever with lettering cut out from it..
would it be better to cover with application tape and apply dry…?many thanks

i’m far from being an expert, but i think that’s how i’d try it, i think that seems to be the the general concensus on here ! “dry dry dry” they all cry from behind glass and tft monitors !

Heres my method, I do tons of frosted window samples for a double glazing co next door I buy the frosted in 50mtr rolls to give you an idea how many. The panels are only around 1000 x 460.
The panel has customers logo lettering etc. I cut the panel and leave it unweeded, apply tape, and spray the window with a fine mist of clean water, apply vinyl and then weed out logo etc. I find this the quickest and best method, even shop windows I do the same.
I know many would say not the way to do it, but after years of applying that way I still prefer it to applying dry. -
This may not be everyones method, but I find that it a lot easier wet, preferably with rapid tac, allows a short period to get film into correct position, squeegee, then move onto 2nd panel, by the time you are finished with that one the first one is ready for removal of tape.

Don’t ever become an expert until you break it down and understand the word.
Ex means has been, and spert is a drip under pressure! 😀

Thank you for your replies
Martin..i never thought of it that way.. i have applied wet but with no logo’s cut out..anyway…it sounds like a good idea to apply this way..
do you work left to right..or like any other graphic..hinge in the middle with masking tape and work both sides separately..Jon

Hello again
on the same subject..
it is advisable to cover the vinyl with application tape on windows that graphics will be 9ft x 2ft…im finding the vinyl is creasing in places if application tape does not lay totally flat…i have worked left to right on these windows before and slowily worked my way across peeling the backing off as i go along, but not having much success wiht this as the logos dont always release themselves…any thoughts anyone on this..
how do most others apply with large windows?thanks again

Dave…. Exactly why i said “i’m far from expert ” lol, my bro used to remind me all the time of that one !
anyways, if you’ve got logo’s / lettering peeling from the glass (wet app’d) when trying to remove the tape, the way i find to do it, where possible, is to simply cut around the offending area / letter and continue peeling the tape off the rest of it, then i can return to that bit, re-squeegee, or even remove, dry glass and re-app if desperate !
i usually i find that another go with the squeegee sorts it out. works for me

We do a lot of this type of work also, and are doing all the windows in a cafe at the moment with 3 bands of silver etch horizontally across each window, with the centre band having lettering cut out with text such as ‘All Day Breakfasts’ etc etc. We are applying on the inside so all lettering has to cut out in reverse.
We used to these wet, although we do almost everything else dry, but have recently started doing these dry also and have found with a little practice it is much quicker. -
Hi John
In reply to your question, on the window panels I frost, I do them flat on the bench so I peel the backing paper off and just lay it on the glass, no hinging I do it by eye to make sure it’s straight.
As for larger panels in shops etc, done a panel beside a door last week
2500 x 650 portrait. Partly peeled backing off starting at top and squeegeed down peeling backing off as I went again with a fine mist of clean water once done, peeled the app tape off straight away went over it with a felt squeegee then weeded out the logo. Went on a treat not a bubble in sight and took about 15-20 mins.
On longer panels I usually work from right to left or hing on the top edge. As I said not every ones method but works well for me. -
thanks again..
Martin..useful advice..ive just got to decide which way im going to do this.. some of the text is fairly close to the edge.so think it’s aplication tape and a light mist of water..if i remember i ll post his job when i ve finished..
cheers
