Need advice on pinstriping
Posted by Jason-Gallagher on 24 September 2005 at 13:31Been persuaded to try pin striping on a DAF cab unit. Every panel imaginable needs to be pinstriped!!
Is it better to buy a roll or cut out yourself?
What is the best thickness to use?
Where do you start and finish-vertical join or horizontal join?Shane Drew replied 20 years, 3 months ago 3 Members · 4 Replies -

I’ve done a few wagon cabs like this, their popular around us.
I usually measure the longest panel length needed and then cut loads that length on the vinyl, they usually end up being around 5mm wide.If they want concaved corner pieces then cut them as well.
I’ve never bothered buying the pinstriping rolls as the colours change for each job.
Fitting as Shane said, whatever suits you and the job.
Try to keep joins high.
It also helps to have some one hold the sheet for you as your removing the stripes.Steve

Ive not done any pinstriping yet, but i would imagine that it would be best to use veticle joins, allowing rainwater to run off.
If your using pinstripes of say 5mm there is not a lot of adhesive to hold the vinyl in place, if you use horizontal joins make sure that you overlap from top to bottom.

Iain, I do a contract here in qld where I lay 90mtres of 6mm on every vehicle. Most automotive tapes, Avery or 3M, are not bothered by the moisture from the rain sitting on the stripes. As long as the vehicle is clean, and you have a small overlap of a couple of mm, verticle or horizontal is not an issue at all.
Stephen makes a valid point, but I would personally use a roll, because there will only be one join. The key to pinstipes looking any good, is to have as few joins as possible, and try and have them in a inconspicous area, on a fold or metal join is ideal.
