  • what painted surface will vinyl not adhere too?

    Hi Everyone,

Just got a job recently that involves applying vinyl to a newly painted, wooden shop front.

Now I seem to remember a topic a while back about vinyl wont bond properly to certain types of paint. Also paint can release gases and cause problems?

Has anyone any advice on the matter or any tips of what to look out for. 😀

    Cheers

    Chris 😀

    Hi Chris and Aaron,

we have done painted wooden shop fronts only had a problem once and that was a really bad paint job, carpenters & decorators also like to use painted site boards as long as they have painted it properly it should be fine. I may be wrong but I think the gas problem is mainly on vehicles.

If it’s gloss paint you shouldn’t have a problem, as long as the paint is completely dry. Even if it feels dry, sometimes it can be soft underneath. Be careful or you could pull the paint off when you remove the tape.

Chris, as Andy has said if it is a wooden facia then it will probably be gloss paint and OK to apply graphics to. As with any painted surface if its not been done properly then there is a risk that the application tape will take the paint off. I normally test a small area but I also explain this to the customer.
As for the paint gassing this happens with cellulose paint as it cures so it wont apply in this case.

I’ve had adhesion problems with vinyl on a latex background, even glossy.
Vinyl sticks to oil-based painted backgrounds like the proverbial poop to a blanket.
I usually never apply wet on a painted background either.
