  • bonding acrylic & foamex – which glue is best?

    hi guys,
i need to bond a sheet of 3mm mirrored acrylic to 5mm foamex to make some raised letters for a sign… need to match existing signage…

i tried using a glue we use for sticking the studs on the the backs of raised letters( tensol 12 i think) as a test piece,
but it has reacted with the backing of the mirror finish and has left little bubbles visible from the front of the letters 😥 ??

any suggestions on which glue to use or how can i bond these with out ruining the mirror for outdoor use??

    cheers
    brian

Brian, I will have a check in the morning, I had the same thing when bonding locators on to mirror acrylic letters, The people who supplied the acrylic knew what to use but I can’t remember who they are now. What about double sided tapes would one of those not be suitable?

I have used d/s tape for this in the past. You really need to use one that comes in sheet form….expensive. Apart from an adhesive that doesn’t attack the mirror, you need to be careful that it doesn’t shrink over time, as this will pull off the mirror stuff also.

Not much help really, am I?

    thanks guys

i could possibly use a tape but the colour of it might show on the edge of the routered letters, thin line i know but its still there….

Right then, I’ve just asked my mate who does a lot of routing. He uses a product called Evostick Mirror Adhesive. You won’t find it in DIY shops, you will have to go to a glazing company. It comes in a sealant type cartridge and is about £12. It definitely sticks mirror to acrylic and stays permanently flexible. I don’t know if it sticks to foamex but he reckons it should. According to him, it is the only product for the job. Even VHB tape will attack the mirror in time.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Brian
I’ve got a bit of double sided banner tape which is white in colour. If its any use I can run over with a bit. I’ve got a few other bits and pieces here to drop over anyway!
