  • What software for a Gerber Edge?

    Posted by cuprar210 on 17 September 2005 at 17:04

Hi everybody, I have just purchased a Gerber edge printer and cutter but it didnt come with any software to drive it. I am new to this kind of work so could anybody point me in the direction or recommend what software I should use to make the most of this machine. Ideally it should be easy to use for a novice and hopefully not cost the earth. any pointers of where to get it, download it etc would be very helpful.

    Regards

    CR

I use Gerber Omega software, I think you can use Signlab as well (not sure). I don’t know if Omega is the best, but it is what I use and what I am used to. http://gerberscientific.com/

Welcome CR,Gerber Omega is the standard software that is used for the Gerber Edge for the newer operating systems, I am currently using Gerber Grafix Advantage 6.2, the Edge however comes in 3 versions over the last 20 years. There is other software that will run an edge but the Gerber stuff is written for it.

    Which one do you have?

Its an Edge 1, I have no further details at the moment as its at work and cant get the serial numbers. Thanks for the replies guys, sounds like the Omega stuff is the way to go, anybody know cost involved or where to download it from?

when i bought an edge it came with omega.

i couldn`t get on with it at all.

bought signlab to run it and was producing work within 30 mins.

I use the Gerber Omega too but personally I hate the software 👿 It came with my edge 2 but I stick with using CorelDraw and export it to Omega just to set foil colours/cut lines etc.
I think the Omega software is pretty pricey – into four figures I’m fairly sure and you need to use a dongle with it. From what I’ve seen I would choose Signlab if I had the choice again.

Welcome to the site by the way !

    Hi cr.
its quite unusual to buy a gerber without software,
what experience have you had up to now? Its an important question to advise you which software suits your needs

Thanks for the replies. Peter its a long story re: getting the edge without the software, failed business venture and I ended up getting the machine back instead of the money I put in. Not to worry. I am very PC compliant and can just about edit and layer things in photoshop but ideally I need to get something thats easy to use. I do recall seeing graphixs advantage with the machine originally but the sign write I was in business with couldnt use it, too familiiar with another package, probably sign labs as that names rings bells. either way I didnt get the software with it.

To be quite honest all we use G Advantage for is to import AI files in and cut / print, all our design work in done in Corel

I used Omega to run a Gerber Maxx and Edge, I found it really easy to use, but I expect it will be pricey. You can run it with Signlab but I have never used it so couldn’t comment.

Think I will have to price the Omega up as it seems the most popular.
