the outlines are pre-scaled, so when you open them in corel (i guess others are the same) they are already at full size, like working with a full scale photo and overlaying the graphics, be sure and ‘lock’ the outlines down tho, it’s a pain when ya wanna move something and drag half the van instead !

there are a few outline library’s on the go… Ingram do one and so do impact. the others i “think” are European and U.S.
i use the impact one and i do recommend it. i haven’t tried Ingram’s but i have heard its not as accurate as impacts & doesn’t have some models.. i think differences is also car names are European like “opal” and “corsa” same cars different names so harder to find.. that may all be fixed by now, so sorry if I’m wrong..

    thanks Rob

I assume there are upgrade packages etc when vehicles change etc..
or do you have to buy the next level of software? ( If that;s how it works)

very early on when i got the cutter, and knowing no better, i bought some cd’s on ebay, included was ‘vehicle outlines’, i don’t know who’s they were, i’m gonna wait for the new version to appear before buying, but will prob go for the impact disc.

and USA guys / gals….. do yuo have an outline disc over there that caters for older classic yanks (cuda’s, challengers, stangs, camaro’s etc) ? i do alot with this type of race car so it’d be good to find one !

i think its for a year your entitled to all upgrades mate… i also think… “maybe” the following disks are discounted slightly as you have first.. i could be wrong there so best asking brian hays…

when you open the outlines they are already scaled upa and ready to use.

I’ve used Ingram in the past and more recently Impact. I prefer the Impact ones as you also get a catalogue showing a printout of all the vehicles listed. You can then recognise a particluar model version by lookingup the picture rather than have to know what make and model version the vehicle actually is.

it also makes your designs for customer proofs much more professional looking 😀

Jon, I had the ingram outlines and found them to be quite a way out on some vans as Robert has said, also he is right about the names of some vans, for example there is no escort van on the disc but there is a ford courier, which just so happens to be the same. What I found myself doing was keeping a note book with all the true panel sizes in for each type of van so if I had to cut the graphics for a van before the van came in I knew they were going to fit.

to be honest, 99% of the time i take photo’s, take a few exact measurements and scale the photo up in corel before adding the design to the vehicle, the customer can then see exactly what it’d look like then,

but the outlines have come in handy for some jobs !

Hugh, I still do that for some jobs if the outline is not available or there are extra bits fitted like glass racks etc. The only problem with doing this is the file size, I archive every job I do for future reference and with files this big once you have done a few vans you might start getting problems with storage.

i’ve already noticed that when trying to attah the cdr to an email !

i think what i’ll do eventually is store each mont on a cd or dvd to keep the hard drive down ! thanks for the tip anyways !

None of them are perfect in every detail, but Impact’s is the best and is fine for anything I am likely to want. I wouldn’t want to be without it and urge everybody to buy it so that Impact stay in business for the future. It is that important to me!

Martin, sorry to contradict, but an Escort and a Courier are not the same. An Escort is an Escort but a Courier was a Fiesta with a boxy body. Could Ingram have them labelled wrongly?

I do the digital pic for all of my stuff. When i’m finished with the job, I reduce everything proportionally to 1/20th size.
Storage hasn’t been a problem yet, I have 3600 files in my “jobs” folder and it’s only about 5 gigs.

I also just bought a 120 gig hard drive for my back-up computer just for storage. it was $50 on tiger direct.com. That’s mainly for my music and personal pics.
Anyone notice how many pics you accumualte when you’ve had a digital camera for a while??

Edit… ijust checked and reduceing size doesn’t always reduce file size…. Sorry for the ill info.

thanks steve, i have noticed that i take a 800kb full size image and when it’s scaled up its monster mb ! so i think you may be right, the cdr side of the image remains only about 100kb max on anything i’ve ever designed.

yeah i nkow what ya mean about digi pics, it’s just so hard to get rid of em, but on the bright side, i can take the laptop on hol, fill up me cam with max size/quality pics, download em a the end of the day and start over next day, better than expensive films and developing, or carrying enuf storage on the cam for a weeks holiday !

I have to sadly upgrade the server again… 350GB artwork and 200GB of digital output PDF files and 1% free on each drive.

Luckly storage is cheap these days.

CDR has compression, so it is pretty neat.

sorry dave if you thought i was cheeky 😀 but i remember rule of thumb…20% lowest to run and 15% to make sure the drive will de-frag 😉

I blame the designers, they love creating unessary 1GB brochure images!
